444 Microwave Theory, Devices and Applications. I; 3 cr (P-I). Advanced analysis of waveguides, stripline, and microstrip; microwave circuit and device theory including ferrites, junctions and resonators; high frequency generation and amplification, microwave systems. P: ECE 420.

impedance transformations and reflection coefficients
Smith Chart
impedance matching networks
higher-order modes
magnetic vector potential
elemental and finite-length dipole antennas
transmitting and receiving properties of antennas
antenna arrays

Microwave Engineering 2nd Edition, David M. Pozar, Wiley, 1998.

Course objectives

To give students an understanding of basic microwave devices and the necessary background to perform simple design of microwave circuits.

Topics covered

Dielectric heating and microwave ovens, safety standards.
Guided wave propagation in rectangular and circular waveguides and guides of arbitrary cross section.
Passive microwave components and scattering matrices.
Microwave resonators.
Stripline and microstrip components and circuits.
Microwave active devices.
Ferrites and nonreciprocal devices.
Microwave systems and demonstrations (Doppler radar, microwave relay systems, microwave network analyzer, etc.).

Class/laboratory schedule

Three 50-minute or two 75-minute lectures per week.
