Liberal Studies Elective Requirements

General Guidelines:

All courses must be designated as Humanities, Social Science, or Literature (H, S, L, or Z).

  • 1 course of at least 3 credits Ethnic Studies (e)
  • 3 credits of Social Science (S)
  • 6 credits of Humanities (H) or Literature (L) (Foreign Language counts as Humanities for College of Engineering students*)
  • Two courses from the same department, at least one at the Intermediate or Advanced level.

Total = 15 or 16 credits (dependent on the engineering department)

Specific requirements vary by department.

*Exception: "Retro credits," which are credits awarded by foreign language departments for successful completion of a higher level course, do not count toward this requirement, nor toward the total of 15 or 16 credits required. They are still helpful: If a student takes even one foreign language course at the intermediate level and is awarded retro credits because the student is judged to have achieved "depth" in liberal studies electives.

How to determine classification of Liberal Studies Electives:

1.  Class Search

  • Real-time, online listing of course sections offered each term. Students can click on course sections to add them to their enrollment shopping cart.
  • Courses in class search have letter representations for liberal studies electives.

2.  Course Guide

  • An online, searchable catalog of courses providing a broad spectrum of course information including the ability to browse course sections offered each term. It is updated six times per day.
  • Courses in course guide have word representations for liberal studies electives.

In Class Search

  • Breadth designation - H, L, S, or Z
    • Foreign Language courses do not have a designation, but count toward Humanities*
    • If W, X, or Y then not a liberal studies elective
  • Ethnic Studies designation - e
    • If no "e" then not an ethnic studies course
  • Depth designation - I, A, or D
    • If listed as (E) then not a depth course

In Course Guide

  • Breadth designation - Humanities, Literature, Social Science, Humanities & Social Science
    • Foreign Language courses do not have a designation, but count toward Humanities*
    • If designated as Natural Science & Social Science, Biological Science & Social Science, or Natural Science & Humanities then not a liberal studies elective
  • Ethnic Studies designation - Ethnic Studies: YES
    • If no listing of ethnic studies then not an ethnic studies course
  • Depth designation - Intermediate, Advanced, or Intermediate & Advanced
    • If listed as Elementary then not a depth course
