Admissions to UW-Madison

To be admitted to the college, students must meet the requirements listed in Wisconsin, Undergraduate Admissions Materials:

Over the years, students entering the college have had average ACT composite scores of 27 and overall SAT scores of 1170. Chemical and biological engineering majors typically have much higher scores. To be successful in chemical and biological engineering, students should have completed four years of both English and math; and courses in physics, chemistry, computer science (programming) and liberal studies.

Application should be made early, but not before September 15, and no later than February 1, for the fall semester. The deadline for spring semester is November 15.

Admission to the Department

The requirements for admission to the CHE classification are the following:

  1. Satisfaction of the College Education Communication Skill Part A requirement and completion of 24 or more degree credits.
  2. Completion of 17 or more credits of calculus, statistics, chemistry, computer science, statics, and physics courses required for an engineering degree. These credits must include Math 222.
  3. A grade point average of 2.50 or higher for all courses in item B.
  4. A grade point average of 2.00 or higher for all courses not included in item B.

Pre-engineering students intending to major in chemical and biological engineering must take the more rigorous chemistry sequence (109) especially designed for majors in the chemical sciences.

Students who meet the above requirements must formally apply for CHE classification. Students currently classified as EGR should apply at the Engineering General Resources Office (1150 Engineering Hall).

Requests for specific information about the Chemical and Biological Engineering program should be made to:

Admission Appeals

Students who meet the requirements listed in A, B, and D, but do not satisfy the math-science GPA requirement in C may appeal to the Dean, 2630 Engineering Hall, for admission. If the Dean indicates that he wants a recommendation from the Chemical and Biological Engineering Faculty before acting on the appeal, the student should proceed as follows:

  1. Obtain an appeal application form from the ChE undergrad program office (2035 Engineering Hall).
  2. Complete the application form and attach official copies of all college transcripts, including UW and non-UW work. You must include grades for your most recent term by submitting either a transcript which includes them or the grade report which you received for the term. Photocopies of transcripts and grade reports are not acceptable.
  3. Submit the application and attached transcripts and grade reports by mailing them to Linda Gatzke, Student Status Examiner, Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, 1415 Engineering Drive, Madison, WI 53706-1691, or by bringing them to the 2035 Engineering Hall.
  4. Appeal applications are considered prior to each semester according to the following schedule:
    1. For fall semester, applications are due July 1. Students will be informed of the Appeals Committee's decision by mail about August 1.
    2. For spring semester, applications are due January 10. Students may obtain the decision of the Appeals Committee from the department office after January 20.
