New Textbooks by Alumni

Laurence Belfiore (PhD '82) authored Transport Phenomena for Chemical Reactor Design (Wiley, 2003). The text, intended for graduate and advanced undergraduates, synthesizes two traditional subject areas in chemical engineering. Laurence is a professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Colorado State University.

Brian Mitchell (MS '87, PhD '91) has authored a new under-graduate textbook, An Introduction to Materials Engineering and Science for Chemical & Materials Engineers (Wiley, 2003). The text is organized by materials class, as well as by the concepts of thermodynamics, kinetics, and transport phenomena. Brian is a professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Tulane University.

Elena Belkin (BS '01) and Michael Bond (BS '01) were married this past June. Elena is in her third year of medical school at Oregon Health and Sciences University, and Michael is working as a chemical engineer at Intel. They live in Portland, OR.

Andrew Draxler (BS '79) has been appointed Chief of Marine Chemistry at the Howard Marine Sciences Lab of NOAA Fisheries, where his current research interests include ecosystem-based approaches to studying the effects of habitat biogeochemicals on fish and lobsters. He continues to serve as the US delegate to the Advisory Committee on the Marine Environment of the International Council for the Exploration of the Seas, and as Laboratory Diving Supervisor. Andy received his PhD in Ecology and Evolution from Rutgers University in 1993.

The board of directors of the Fulbright Association nominated, and the full membership has formally approved the nomination of R. Fenton-May (MS '68, PhD '71) to serve as president of the association for 2004. He has served as interim president since May 2003. Fenton came to Madison as a student in 1967 with a Fulbright grant. Fenton is now retired from Coca Cola and is director and chairman of e*freightrac Holdings BV.

Gerald Liu (BS '72) is working as an engineering associate with Syncrude Canada, Ltd. and is the specification holder on control valves and flow instruments for the company. He reports that he has applied a lot of knowledge of transport phenomena that he learned from Bob Bird. In his spare time, Gerald paints flowers and birds in traditional Chinese style (see www.altech.ab.ca/gliu/gerald.htm).

Arthur Overholser (MS '66, PhD '69) was browsing our web page at www.engr.wisc. edu/che/ when it occurred to him that he hadn't "checked in" for some years (have you?). Art is now the senior associate dean of engineering at Vanderbilt University, and holds appointments in both the Departments of Biomedical Engineering and Chemical Engineering.

Kenneth Rice (MS '96) had his second daughter, Dora Ruth in July. Ken is an adjunct professor at Southeastern Community College in Whiteville, NC.

Jeffrey Siirola (PhD '70) has been elected to the positions of president-elect of AIChE for 2004 and president for 2005. Jeff has been active in AIChE for over 35 years and has held a variety of leadership positions within the national organization as well as the East Tennessee Local Section. Jeff is a technology fellow at Eastman Chemical Co., where he has worked for 32 years in process design and evaluation, among other areas. He is also actively involved in education and accreditation issues, and has visited half of the country's chemical engineering programs and many around the world.

Brian Yeh (BS '84) is now president of Thermodyne Corporation, a company specializing in wastewater treatment equipment and modular plants for the oilseed, organic food, and nutrition industries. Thermodyne also provides consulting and engineering services to all related industries.

Joseph Yosick (MS '95) and his wife Colleen had their first child, Conor Joseph, in July. Joe is a patent attorney at Brinks, Hofer, Gilson, & Lione in Chicago, where he specializes in chemical, mechanical, and nanotechnology patents.
