In memoriamChieh "Jay" Chu (MS '59, PhD '61) passed away in February. Jay began his career with Sinclair Research and went on to teaching chemical engineering at UCLA. He joined Getty Oil Company in 1972 and remained with the company after its acquisition by Texaco until his retirement in 1984. Jay's innovations in thermal recovery made production possible in such areas as Kern River in California and in Indonesia, where drilling was considered economically unfeasible. In addition to authoring many papers, Jay wrote the chapter on thermal recovery for the Petroleum Engineering Handbook. In 1993, Jay was named a Texaco Honorary Fellow in recognition of his contributions to the field. John L. Tschernitz (BS '44, PhD '53) also died in February. John worked at the USDA Forest Products Laboratory in Madison for 33 years, retiring in 1999. He had a longtime interest in nature and the outdoors, and devoted much of his career to research related to the solar-drying of wood.
