Tom Chapman, now emeritus, has been appointed as Acting Director in the Division of Chemical and Transport Systems at the National Science Foundation. Tom has been serving as Director of NSF's Interfacial, Transport & Separation Processes Program.
Having served as the founding director of the UW Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) on Nano-structured Materials and Interfaces for its first five-year funding cycle, and having overseen the successful five-year renewal of its funding from the National Science Foundation, Tom Kuech is taking a well-deserved break from his administrative responsibilities with the center. Juan de Pablo has stepped forward to lead the center in its mission to carry out research in the formation, characterization, and exploitation of materials at the nanoscale.
On the recommendation of the departmental faculty, the Executive Committee of the UW Physical Sciences Division and the dean, the Board of Regents in June promoted Paul Nealey to associate professor with tenure.
Eric Shusta, our most recent faculty hire, has received a Camille and Henry Dreyfus New Faculty Award. The Dreyfus award provides unrestricted research support to outstanding individuals in the chemical sciences at the start of their research and teaching activities. It is the expectation of the foundation that the award will assist new faculty to realize their promise as educators.
ON THESE FOUNDATIONS is published twice a year for alumni and friends of the UW-Madison Department of Chemical Engineering.
