Course Prerequisite(s)

Prerequisite knowledge and/or skills

Thinking of taking CBE 599 Independent Study credit in ChE? Here is what you need to do:

  1. First check out individual faculty research interests. Information can be obtained by reading the ChE Research Programs guide to determine what areas of study you might pursue with each professor. We suggest you look for the information on the website first, then ask for the guide in room 2035.

  2. Contact professors by telephone or email for an appointment to discuss and set up your 599 project.

  3. Fill out the "ChE Course Permission Form" and obtain required signatures. Forms are available in the wall trays outside room 2035 Engineering Hall. Return the completed form to Linda J. Gatzke and add the course by touchtone during registration.

599 projects can vary from 1 to 4 credits per semester or summer session. Students are expected to work 3 hours per credit per week during the spring and fall semesters. Most professors require a final written report summarizing your work; however, 599 projects and professor's requirements and expectations are highly individualized.

If you have any further questions, please contact Linda J. Gatzke at 608/262-7775 or gatzke@engr.wisc.edu.

Course objectives

This individualized course for upper-level students are under the direction of individual faculty members in the Department of Chemical Engineering. Students choose an area of research or an independent study project and work independently in the lab or library toward increasing their knowledge outside the formal courses offered in the department. Research is offered in a wide range of areas: biotechnology, virology and biomedical engineering; kinetics and catalysis; fluid mechanics; electrochemistry; solid-state and electronic materials; polymers; process dynamics and control; and process modeling and design. A detailed description of the research areas students may pursue is included in each faculty member's Independent Study Research Summary.
