311 Thermodynamics of Mixtures. I, II; 3cr. Properties of ideal and non-ideal vapors and liquids, ideal and non-ideal multicomponent vapor-liquid and liquid-liquid equilibria, complex chemical reaction equilibria, electrolytic solutions, surface thermodynamics, solid phase thermodynamics. P: CBE 211 with grade of C or better. de Pablo, Swaney, Root, Yin.

Prerequisite knowledge and/or skills

General chemistry
Elementary understanding of chemical engineering processes
Chemical process thermodyanamics
Ability to use computers for problem solving

"Thermo 2000" by Jay Schieber and Juan de Pablo

Course objectives

Continuation of CBE 211
Ability to apply chemical thermodynamics to systems to determine phase and chemical equilibrium
Familiarity with terminology, theory, and common models used to describe solutions and mixtures

Topics covered

Solution thermodynamics
Ideal and Real mixtures
Vapor-liquid equilibrium
Liquid-liquid equilibrium
Vapor-liquid-liquid equilibrium
Solid-liquid equilibrium
Equations of state
Chemical reaction equilibrium

Class/laboratory schedule

2 75-minute lectures, TR 8:00
weekly 50-minute discussion section, 1:20 or 2:25 Monday afternoon

This course introduces the terminology,theory and common models to describe multicomponent, multiphase, and chemical reaction systems. Students must apply math, science, and engineering knowledge to describe and analyze data from equilibrium systems. Material in this course serves as building blocks for CBE 426 and CBE 430
