Admissions Frequently Asked Questions

Please carefully read both the Graduate School’s Frequently Asked Questions site and the department’s Frequently Asked Questions (below) if you are considering applying to the Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) department’s graduate program.

  1. Before You Apply
    1. Graduate Degrees within the CEE Department

What graduate degrees are offered by the CEE department?

The CEE department offers an M.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering and a Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering.

About how long will it take me to earn an M.S. degree from the CEE department?

It takes approximately two years to earn an M.S. degree from the CEE department.

About how long will it take me to obtain a Ph.D. degree from the CEE department?

It takes approximately five years to earn a Ph.D. degree from the CEE department.

Can I apply to the Ph.D. program directly or do I need to earn an M.S. degree first?

Applicants with a bachelor’s degree may apply directly to the Ph.D. program if interested.

    2. CEE Department Faculty

How should I go about speaking with a faculty member about my research interests?

Prospective graduate students are individually responsible for investigating the research interests of CEE faculty members. Prospective graduate students are also individually responsible for contacting faculty members in person, via email, or via telephone about their research interests.

    3. Graduate School Application

How do I get an application?

      You may apply online here.

How may I obtain a paper application?

We no longer send paper application packets to applicants. Please use your university's computer facilities, local libraries, or internet café locations to apply online.

How can I change my intended admission term from one term to another?

Applicants are allowed to change their intended admission term only once for each application fee paid and only to an adjacent term (for example, fall to spring). Applicants wishing to change their intended admission term more than once for each application fee paid or to a non-adjacent term will have to submit a new application and pay the application fee once again. Contact the Graduate School Admissions Office (608/262-2433 or gradadmiss@bascom.wisc.edu) to change your intended admission term.

    4. Application and Funding Support Deadlines

When are the application and funding support deadlines?

      Enrollment TermFinancial Support DeadlineApplication Deadine
      FallJanuary 15March 15
      SpringOctober 15October 15
      SummerMarch 15March 15

    5. Funding/Financial Aid

What are my chances of receiving funding?

Funding is awarded on the basis of the qualifications of the student, the number of applicants, the amount of available funding, and the number of continuing students receiving support. As these vary from term to term, we cannot answer this question directly. It is best to contact faculty directly inquiring about available funding opportunities.

How do I apply for funding?

You can apply for funding (RA, PA, or TA positions or fellowships) when you fill out the Graduate School’s online admission application and/or by contacting individual faculty members directly. The admissions office does not know if a particular professor has funds for assistantships. Those inquiries, and all other inquiries regarding funding opportunities, should be directed to the faculty directly.

    6. Admission Requirements

      What are the admission requirements?

Both the Graduate School and the CEE department have admission requirements that you must meet in order to be considered for admission. The Graduate School’s admission requirements are available here while the CEE department’s admission requirements are available here.

What are my chances of being admitted?

We cannot answer any questions about your admissibility until we review your complete application.

    7. Required Application Materials

What application materials do I need to submit online? What application materials do I need to send to the department?

      Submit Online:

      * Online application including the non-refundable application fee.
      https://www.gradsch.wisc.edu/eapp/eapp.pl

      * 1,000 word Statement of Purpose for Graduate Study.
(Your statement of purpose for graduate study (that is, reasons for graduate study) should be submitted online through your online application.)

      * Three Letters of Recommendation
(Your three letters of recommendation should be submitted online through your Graduate School application.)

      Send to CEE Graduate Admissions:
2312 Engineering Hall, 1415 Engineering Drive, Madison, WI 53706-1691
      608/265-5570
      http://www.engr.wisc.edu/cee/prospective/grad/admission.html
      * Two official transcripts from each institution attended. International academic records must be in the original language accompanied by an official English translation. Documents must be issued by the institution with the official seal/stamp and an official signature.
      * Résumé or Curriculum Vitae.
Send to the University of Wisconsin-Madison:
      * Request that the Educational Testing Service (ETS) send your official GRE scores (if applicable) electronically to the University of Wisconsin-Madison (Institution Code: 1846, no department code is needed). (Scores are accepted if they are within five years of the start of the admission term.)
      * Request that the Educational Testing Service (ETS) send your official English proficiency test scores (for example, TOEFL or IELTS), if applicable, electronically to the University of Wisconsin-Madison (Institution Code: 1846, no department code is needed). (Scores are accepted if they are within two years of the start of the admission term.)

Attention International Applicants: Please do not send financial documents until requested by the Graduate School. This information will be requested upon a positive admission recommendation from the department.

What can I do to speed up the review of my application?

Send all your application materials to us in a SINGLE envelope, after successful completion of the online application. Sending documents individually does not speed up the process because we do not review files until they are complete. Also, application materials that come in piece-by-piece are much more difficult to keep track of.

    8. Letters of Recommendation

Will you accept hard copies of my letters of recommendation?

If it proves impossible for your letter writers to submit their letters of recommendation electronically through your Graduate School application, you may send hard copies of your letters to: CEE Graduate Admissions, 2312 Engineering Hall, 1415 Engineering Drive, Madison, WI 53706-1691, 608/265-5570.

If I’m submitting hard copies of my letters of recommendation, do my letter writers need to submit a letter of recommendation form with their letters?

If it proves impossible for your letter writers to submit their letters of recommendation electronically through your Graduate School application and you are submitting hard copies of your letters, your letter writers do not need to submit a letter of recommendation form with their letters.

    9. Statement of Purpose

What should my statement of purpose (reasons for graduate study) include?

Technical areas of interest, coursework emphasis, research experience, professional goals, and any other items unique or relevant to your qualifications for graduate school.

    10. GRE General Test Scores

What are the average GRE scores of your incoming Fall 2008 graduate students?

The following figures are not cutoffs. They are the middle 50% range, so 25% of the incoming graduate students for Fall 2008 fell below the range and 25% placed above it. GRE Verbal: 23rd–73rd percentile. GRE Quantitative: 77th–90th percentile.

  2. Processing Your Application
    1. Checking Your Application Status

Have you received all of my application materials? Is my application complete?

Due to the high volume of applications that we receive, it is impossible for us to acknowledge receipt of application materials at the departmental level. We recommend that you use express mail and track your package, or if using regular postal services, request a return receipt. It is safe to assume that if our building mail clerk has signed for your package, it will be delivered to our graduate admissions office. It can often take our admissions staff 2-4 weeks to update the status of your application once we’ve received your application materials.

How do I check the status of my online application?

We do our best to send occasional email messages to notify you of the status of your application, but you are individually responsible for reviewing and monitoring your graduate application until you receive an official admission decision from the Graduate School at the UW-Madison. There are two important systems that graduate applicants can use to monitor the status of their applications.

The first is the unofficial graduate application system found here. You will need your 10-digit UW-Madison campus ID number and the password that will be sent to you via email (when we initially acknowledge the receipt of your graduate application) to log into this system.

The second is the official graduate application system used by the Graduate School itself. You can access this system by visiting the “Grad Application Status” window within your MyUW portal. If you are new to the UW-Madison, you will first need to activate your NetID by visiting the NetID Account Activation site. You will need your 10-digit UW-Madison campus ID number and your date of birth to complete the NetID activation process.

I've already filled out the online application, paid my fees, and sent in all my application materials. What else should I do?

Wait for our reply; we will contact you if we need any additional information.

    2. Admission Decision

When will I be notified of an admission decision?

You will be initially notified by email with the department's admission recommendation. If the department’s admission recommendation is favorable, you will receive an official letter of admission from the Graduate School if/when you have been officially admitted. Each area in the department has different timeframes for informing students depending on the time of the year, the number of applicants in that area, and many other circumstances. On average, graduate applicants will receive the department's admission recommendation about two to three months after we receive a completed application.

    3. Funding/Financial Aid/Adequate Financial Resources

When do I submit proof of adequate financial resources?

International applicants should not send financial documents until requested by the Graduate School. This information will be requested upon a positive admission recommendation from the department.

Do I still need to show adequate financial resources for the duration of my program even if I am applying for financial aid?

International applicants are required to have sufficient funds to cover their expenses completely while attending the UW-Madison. If you are not offered financial support, you will have to show proof of sufficient funds before you can be officially admitted by the Graduate School. More information is available here.

How will I be notified, and when will I be notified, of a funding offer?

You will only be notified by email and/or letter of a funding offer if, and only if, you have been selected to receive one. Most financial support offers are made to students applying for fall semester enrollment rather than spring semester or summer term enrollment.

Most applicants selected to receive funding will be notified by March 1st if they are applying for fall semester enrollment. The department continues to consider applicants for financial support as any additional funding becomes available; therefore, some applicants may be notified later than March 1st.

  3. After You Are Admitted
    1. Accepting or Declining Your Admission Offer

How do I accept or decline my admission offer?

Please email the CEE Graduate Admissions Team at cee@engr.wisc.edu with your enrollment intentions. You must include the following in your enrollment intention email: (a) your full name, (b) your 10-digit UW-Madison campus ID number, and (c) the term you applied for.

    2. Deferring Your Admission

Can I defer my entry into the program?

Admitted applicants are allowed to defer their entry into the program by only one term (applicants admitted for fall may defer their entry until spring, applicants admitted for spring may defer their entry until summer, and applicants admitted for summer may defer their entry until fall). Contact the Graduate School Admissions Office (608/262-2433 or gradadmiss@bascom.wisc.edu) to defer your entry into the program. You would need to submit a new application and pay the application fee once again if you are interested in being considered for admission for any subsequent terms.

    3. Faculty Advisors

      Who is my advisor?

Your initial advisor is your area's admission chair. After meeting with your area's admission chair, you may be assigned to a faculty member whose interests are more closely aligned with your own, or you may retain the admission chair as your advisor. As students become more familiar with the faculty in their first semester, changes in advisor may occur.

How do I change my advisor?

Contact the CEE/ECE/GLE Student Services Office (2304a Engineering Hall) if you would like to change your advisor.
