CEE GOLF OUTING

Please mark your calendar for Monday, Sept. 17, 2007 for the 11th annual CEE Golf Outing! This event will exceed your expectations. We expect to fill two 18-hole golf courses with students, alumni, and industry partners totaling close to 300 people. There will be a live auction like you have never seen before with items such as UW football, basketball, and hockey tickets; Green Bay Packer tickets; and many other items of high value and interest.

Please consider donating something of value for the auction or becoming an event sponsor.

Visit www.engr.wisc.edu/cee/CEEGolfOuting2007.pdf for more detailed information. We hope to raise more than $65,000 for the department at this event and need your help to make it happen.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR: Forward Progress

Jeffrey S. Russell, CEE Chair

Jeffrey S. Russell, P.E., Chair (View larger image)

Decorative initial cap The spring semester once again has been marked by a number of key events, including receptions for our alumni and industry connections in Chicago, Minneapolis, and Washington, D.C.; the ASCE student regional competition; James Schneider’s offer and acceptance to join the faculty in August of 2008; our ranking of 13th in the U.S. News and World Report; the promotion of Associate Professor David Noyce; 51 graduates this semester; the department’s focus on strategic planning; the election of Professor Greg Harrington as associate chair of undergraduate education and Professor Larry Bank as associate chair of graduate studies; and alumni events for our 1947–1957 graduates during the Wisconsin Alumni Association’s Alumni Weekend.

From the development perspective, we are visiting with our alumni and industry partners to raise funds for faculty startup packages because, for us to remain competitive in recruiting first-rate faculty members, we must provide a startup package to kick-start their teaching and research careers. The department must raise $100,000 for each new faculty member; the majority of these funds are normally used for laboratory equipment and supporting graduate students.

In addition, we are seeking funds to support programs we have expanded over the last three years. The department invests approximately $25,000 annually to support student-based competitions such as the Steel Bridge and Concrete Canoe competitions. Another recent development in education in the department is two pilot courses in architectural engineering and construction collaborative design and in building information modeling. Our investment in these two classes is $25,000 per year over a three-year period.

Finally, faculty and staff professional development is crucial to enhancing the effectiveness of our department, and demands on faculty and staff have changed significantly over the last five years. In response, we want to send faculty to the Center for Creative Leadership and to fund staff professional development activities that enhance their communication capabilities, technical literacy and operational efficiency. We are investing about $25,000 per year in this initiative.

If you are interested and able to help us meet any of these needs, please contact me or Deb Holt at the University of Wisconsin Foundation at 608/263-0779 or Deb.Holt@uwfoundation.wisc.edu.

Stop in and see us any time you are in Madison.

On Wisconsin!
Respectfully Yours,

Jeffrey S. Russell, PhD, P.E., F., ASCE
