The American Society of Civil Engineers has selected
Ahmet Aydilek (MS ’96, PhD ’00) its 2006 recipient
of the Arthur Casagrande Professional Development Award, the highest
award ASCE bestows on a junior researcher in geotechnical engineering.
Aydilek has worked extensively on flow through geosynthetics, as that
flow relates to remediation and beneficial reuse of recycled materials
and high-water-content geomaterials. He also investigates possible uses
of petroleum-contaminated soils, fly ash, wastewater treatment sludge,
and dredged sediments in geotechnical construction.
At the GeoCongress 2006 conference, Feb. 26 to March
1, the technical organizing committee selected the paper, “Influence
of Pile Shape on the Crushable Behavior of Granular Materials around
Driven Piles: DEM Analysis,” by Luis Eduardo
Vallejo (PhD ’77) and Sebastian Lobo-Guerrero for special
commendation in the numerical modeling and analysis track. Vallejo is
a professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University
of Pittsburgh.
ASCE has selected Kenneth R. Wright
(BS ’51, MS ’57) as an honorary member. He is among only
555 people to hold this distinguished grade of membership within ASCE
since 1853.
