FACULTY and STAFF NEWS
The university awarded a research professor title
to Academic Affairs Assistant Dean Sarah
K. Pfatteicher. She began working in the College of Engineering
as a lecturer in civil and environmental engineering and engineering
professional development. In 2001, she became assistant dean for engineering
academic affairs; now her administrative responsibilities broadly encompass
areas of student services, including student organizations, international
programs, the Engineering Learning Center, K-12 outreach programs, and
accreditation and educational initiatives. Pfatteicher’s research
appointment is in the department.
Professor Larry
Bank and Associate Professor Mike
Oliva are among authors of the paper, “Tests of pultruded
FRP plank as formwork and reinforcement for concrete structures,”
which received the 2006 best paper award in the construction and infrastructure
category from the American Composites Manufacturers Association. Other
paper authors include Han-Ug Bae and Jeffrey Barker of Wisconsin and
Seung-Woon Yu of Kwandong University, Korea. Bank and Oliva are among
developers of GRIDFORM FRP Bridge Deck Panels, a technology that received
one of two awards for composites excellence at the American Composites
Manufacturers Association Composites & Polycon 2006 conference in
St. Louis.
John Wiley & Sons Inc. published Composites
for Construction: Structural Design with FRP Materials, the first
text on fiber-reinforced polymer design for structural engineering applications,
by Professor Larry
Bank. Wiley & Sons also released the seventh edition of Reinforced
Concrete Design, by Professors Emeritus Chu-Kia
Wang and Charles
G. Salmon and Associate Professor José
Pincheira.
Wisconsin Sen. Alan Lasee and Rep. Steve Wieckert,
co-chairs of the Wisconsin Joint Legislative Council, appointed Wisconsin
Transportation Center Deputy Director and Associate Researcher Jason
Bittner as a public member of the council Special Committee on Airport
Authorities.
Associate Professors José
Pincheira and Michael
Oliva are among authors of the paper, “Behavior of double-tee
flange connectors subjected to in-plane monotonic and reversed cyclic
loads,” which received the PCI Martin C. Korn Award.
The Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) has
elected Associate Professor Michael
Oliva to the position of fellow. Oliva’s research involves
experimentally testing structures and proving and developing analytical
techniques for simulating structural behavior or designing structural
elements.
Associate Professor Jamie
Schauer received the 2006 Kenneth T. Whitby Award from the American
Association for Aerosol Research. In particular, the award recognizes
Schauer’s research in developing chemical analysis tools to characterize
aerosols, and his use of these tools to advance understanding of the
sources and effects of atmospheric aerosols.
