STEEL BRIDGE TEAM FINISHES FOURTH
The UW-Madison steel bridge team
placed fourth at the national American Society of Civil Engineering
Steel Bridge Competition held in late May in Colorado. The steel
bridge team finished in the top three in four of the six subcategories
that comprise the overall competition. The team finished second
in speed and economy and third in lightness and aesthetics. Earlier
this year, the steel bridge team took first place at the Great
Lakes Regional Competition held in Milwaukee. It won first place
at the regional competition in weight, aggregate deflection, construction
economy, aesthetics, and structural efficiency.

Graduate student Tim Gates
recently received the 2003 Martin Bruening Award from the Wisconsin
Section Institute of Transportation Engineers for his paper, “Effectiveness
of a Rear-Facing Flashing Beacon in School Speed Limit Sign Assemblies.”
Gates received the award at the March 4 Wisconsin Section ITE meeting
in Milwaukee. He is a PhD student and research assistant working with
Assistant
Professor David Noyce, with an emphasis in traffic engineering and
statistics.
A project developed by the UW-Madison chapter of
Engineers Without Borders
to provide improve existing water conditions in the African country
of Rwanda has been named a 2004-05 Wisconsin Idea Undergraduate Fellowship
recipient by the UW-Madison Morgridge Center for Public Service. The
fellowship program supports innovative service-learning projects and
community-based research projects. The Rwandan water project seeks to
improve water systems in the country and identify sources of biological
and chemical water contaminants in the rural community of Muramba. Students
involved in the project include Matthew Bretl,
Timothy Miller, and Evan
Parks. Their advisor is
Professor Peter Bosscher.
Two CEE undergraduate students have received Holstrom
Environmental Research Scholarships, which provide a stipend to both
the student and their supervising faculty member for collaboration on
a research project. The recipients are Daniel Gall
and Erin Elaine Seyfried, both of whom will
work under Assistant
Professor Katherine McMahon.
