CEE IN THE NEWS

Professor Larry Bank wrote a letter to the editor of Engineering News-Record, urging that the construction industry embrace “sustainable engineering” by adopting use of newer and more durable construction materials.

A number of Wisconsin and national media outlets reported on an agreement signed between TrafficCast Inc., a company with ties to the College of Engineering, and the Republic of China to create a traffic information nerve center to monitor traffic problems and ease gridlock in the city of Shanghai. The agreement was announced as part of Gov. Jim Doyle’s March trade mission to China. TrafficCast is a Madison traffic information and engineering company founded in part by Associate Professor Bin Ran, who specializes in traffic control and information systems. Among the media reporting on the Chinese agreement were the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, the Wisconsin State Journal, the Capital Times, biztimes daily, WFRV-TV in Green Bay, and the Miami Herald.

An article about a demonstration bridge project on U.S. Highway 151 near Waupun, Wisconsin, was recently featured in Midwest Construction magazine. The article focused in part on fiber-reinforced polymer material that is being used for a bridge deck. It’s the first time the technology has been used on a bridge deck project in Wisconsin. The technology was developed by Professors Larry Bank and Jeffrey Russell and Associate Professor Mike Oliva. The bridge-deck project was also featured on the Compositesworld.com website. The bridge has been selected as a finalist for the 2004 Civil Engineering Research Foundation (CERF) Charles Pankow Award for Innovation.

Studies by two civil and environmental engineering professors aimed at investigating the impact of prions on wastewater treatment facilities were featured in a May 27 report on the ScienceDaily.com website. Professor Craig Benson and Assistant Professor Katherine (Trina) McMahon will examine what happens to infectious prion proteins, the cause of chronic wasting and mad cow diseases, when they enter wastewater treatment plants.

Professor Teresa M. Adams was quoted in the cover story, “Increased Needs, Decreased Funds Fuel eRevolution,” in the April 2004 issue of Public Works magazine. The article discussed how public works agencies are using information technology to meet the broadening demands of growing communities. In the article, Adams describes how agencies now use information technology to make better decisions for operations and asset management.

The UW-Madison Steel Bridge team was featured in a May 30 article in the Denver Post on the ASCE National Steel Bridge Competition. The article focused on the national competition, which featured a record 45 teams. The UW-Madison team finished fourth in the national competition.

Professor Ken Potter was quoted in a June 8 article in the Aberdeen (South Dakota) American News on a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers study on the likelihood of future floods in areas such as flood plains near the Missouri and Mississippi rivers.

A project aimed at assessing water quality in the African country of Rwanda, undertaken by the UW-Madison chapter of Engineers Without Borders, was featured in the April 4 edition of the Wisconsin State Journal. The article featured biomedical engineering student Andrea Khosropour and Professor Peter Bosscher, who serves as an advisor to the local EWB chapter.
