Professor
Larry Bank wrote a letter to the editor of Engineering
News-Record, urging that the construction industry embrace “sustainable
engineering” by adopting use of newer and more durable construction
materials.
A number of Wisconsin and national media outlets
reported on an agreement signed between TrafficCast Inc., a company
with ties to the College of Engineering, and the Republic of China to
create a traffic information nerve center to monitor traffic problems
and ease gridlock in the city of Shanghai. The agreement was announced
as part of Gov. Jim Doyle’s March trade mission to China. TrafficCast
is a Madison traffic information and engineering company founded in
part by Associate
Professor Bin Ran, who specializes in traffic control and information
systems. Among the media reporting on the Chinese agreement were the
Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, the Wisconsin
State Journal, the Capital Times, biztimes
daily, WFRV-TV in Green Bay, and the Miami
Herald.
An article about a demonstration bridge project on
U.S. Highway 151 near Waupun, Wisconsin, was recently featured in Midwest
Construction magazine. The article focused in part on fiber-reinforced
polymer material that is being used for a bridge deck. It’s the
first time the technology has been used on a bridge deck project in
Wisconsin. The technology was developed by Professors
Larry Bank and Jeffrey
Russell and Associate
Professor Mike Oliva. The bridge-deck project was also featured
on the Compositesworld.com website. The bridge has been selected as
a finalist for the 2004 Civil Engineering Research Foundation (CERF)
Charles Pankow Award for Innovation.
Studies by two civil and environmental engineering
professors aimed at investigating the impact of prions on wastewater
treatment facilities were featured in a May 27 report on the ScienceDaily.com
website. Professor
Craig Benson and Assistant
Professor Katherine (Trina) McMahon will examine what happens to
infectious prion proteins, the cause of chronic wasting and mad cow
diseases, when they enter wastewater treatment plants.
Professor
Teresa M. Adams was quoted in the cover story, “Increased
Needs, Decreased Funds Fuel eRevolution,” in the April 2004 issue
of Public Works magazine. The article discussed
how public works agencies are using information technology to meet the
broadening demands of growing communities. In the article, Adams describes
how agencies now use information technology to make better decisions
for operations and asset management.
The UW-Madison Steel Bridge team was featured in
a May 30 article in the Denver Post on the
ASCE National Steel Bridge Competition. The article focused on the national
competition, which featured a record 45 teams. The UW-Madison team finished
fourth in the national competition.
Professor
Ken Potter was quoted in a June 8 article in the
Aberdeen (South Dakota) American News on a U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers study on the likelihood of future floods in areas such as
flood plains near the Missouri and Mississippi rivers.
A project aimed at assessing water quality in the
African country of Rwanda, undertaken by the UW-Madison chapter of Engineers
Without Borders,
was featured in the April 4 edition of the Wisconsin
State Journal. The article featured biomedical engineering student
Andrea Khosropour and Professor
Peter Bosscher, who serves as an advisor to the local EWB chapter.
