Decorative initial cap The Mullins Family Scholarship has been established in the civil & environmental engineering department on behalf of Madison developer and civic leader Jerome J. Mullins, P.E.

Proceeding a career in the United States Navy Air Corps during World War II, Mullins graduated from UW-Madison with a BS in civil engineering in 1950. In the 54 years since his graduation, Mullins has become one of Madison’s most prominent figures in building design, construction supervision and ownership.

Upon graduation from college, Mullins joined General Engineering Co. in Portage, Wisconsin, and worked on municipal engineering projects such as schools, sewers and streets. Only six years out of engineering school, he joined Weiler & Strang Architects/Engineers where he was in charge of the firm’s structural engineering and construction coordination activities for eight years. In 1964, Mullins formed his own consulting engineering firm, Jerome J. Mullins and Associates.

During Mullins’ career, he has been sought out as an engineer for his structural creativity, ingenuity and cost-effective engineering services. Many of the Madison area’s most prominent developers and every level of government, from the federal government, to towns and villages, have hired Mullins to design or supervise construction of their projects.

A registered professional engineer in Wisconsin, Mullins has been a director of Downtown Madison, Inc. since 1976. He is also a member of the National Board of Realtors, the National Construction Specifications Institute, and the Wisconsin Society of Professional Engineers. Jerry has served on many community boards and has received numerous awards and honors, both for his engineering and community services.

From the University of Wisconsin, Mullins received the Civil and Environmental Engineering, Construction Engineering and Management Program 2000 Lifetime Achievement in Construction award, and the College of Engineering 2002 Distinguished Service Award.

Jerry and his wife, Carol, have been married for 54 years. They have five grown children: Maureen, a physician; Brian, an engineer and attorney; Mallory, an attorney; Brad, a business executive; and Jay, a professional engineer. Brian and Jay are CEE graduates.
