Faculty newsProfessor Larry Bank has been appointed to a five-year term on the International Editorial Board of Advances in Structural Engineering an international journal. The journal publishes research in the general area of structural engineering and serves as an international forum for the exchange of ideas, especially between countries in the Eastern and Western hemispheres. The journal focuses on papers dealing with the solution of engineering problems that arise in challenging construction projects. Bank currently serves as associate chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering's Constructed Facilities Division. Bank (and co-authors) has also received the Thomas Fitch Rowland Prize for 2002 from the American Society of Civil Engineers for the paper, "Construction of a Pultruded Composite Structure: A Case Study." Bank's co-authors were T. Russell Gentry, Kenneth H. Nuss, Stephanie S. Hurd, Anthony J. Lamanna, Steven Duich and Ben Oh. The award is given to a paper describing in detail the accomplished works of construction or valuable contributions to construction management and construction engineering. Professor Ken Potter has been elected as a fellow of the American Geophysical Union. The AGU is a Washington, D.C.-based organization that provides information and research on atmospheric and oceanic sciences, as well as solid earth, hydrologic and space sciences. Fellows are selected from the AGU's membership in recognition of their prominent contributions to the field of geophysical sciences. Emeritus Professor Paul Berthouex has been selected as a member of the University of Iowa's Distinguished Alumni Engineering Academy. Berthouex is one of five members selected this year for the honor, and one of only 48 members of the academy. The academy recognizes distinguished alumni for their contributions, achievements, leadership and service to the engineering profession. Berthouex earned BS (1963) and MS (1964) from Iowa in civil and environmental engineering before moving to the College of Engineering to earn his PhD in civil and environmental engineering. He joined the college in 1971, and retired in 1999. His research specialized in wastewater treatment and water supplies, and he worked for several years in developing countries in creating systems for clean water. Berthouex will be inducted into the academy during ceremonies on the University of Iowa campus in June. |
