UW Steel Bridge team places second in nationals
The University of Wisconsin-Madison Steel Bridge team took second place at the 2003 National Steel Bridge Competition in San Diego, its highest finish ever. The team placed among the top three in six of the seven categories in the steel bridge competition, earning first-place finishes in construction speed and structural efficiency, second-place finishes in lightness and construction economy, and a third-place finish in aesthetics. The competition featured 43 teams, and involves student teams designing and constructing a scaled-down bridge to meet U.S. Department of Transportation specifications. Earlier in the spring semester, the UW-Madison Steel Bridge team won the Midwest regional steel bridge competition in Indiana. The steel bridge team won several competitions in garnering its first-place regional win. It was first in construction speed, construction economy, structural efficiency, lightness, and aesthetics. It also won a special ingenuity award for its bridge design.
