CEE students win prestigious Dwight David Eisenhower Transportation Fellowships

Timothy J. Gates

Timothy J. Gates, a PhD student in the department, was recently awarded the Dwight D. Eisenhower Transportation Fellowship by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

"This is the most competitive and prestigious fellowship that is available to transportation engineering graduate students" said Assistant Professor David A. Noyce, Gates' faculty advisor. "Tim was one of only a few students in the United States to receive this comprehensive fellowship. What is even more remarkable is that Tim is a two-time awardee, having received an Eisenhower Fellowship during his undergraduate MS studies in 1999."

The Eisenhower Transportation Fellowship Program was established in 1992 under the provisions of the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991 and was re-authorized in 1998 by the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century. It annually seeks to attract the best and brightest minds to the field of transportation research and the transportation workforce. It encompasses all modes of transportation.

Selection criteria for student awards include an applicant's academic achievements, recommendations, and likelihood for pursuit of a career in transportation. The FHWA's National Highway Institute manages the program. The Eisenhower fellowship pays all tuition and fees along with a monthly stipend during the entire duration of the students graduate program.

In addition, Josue Yambo, an MS student in the department, received a partial Eisenhower Fellowship, which will cover his expenses to attend the Transportation Research Board (TRB) Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C.
