More than 1,200 engineering students from throughout the country will descend on the UW-Madison campus in June to take part in the 150th National Student Conference of The American Society of Civil Engineers.

The event will be held June 21-24, and include students, civil and government leaders, industry representatives, and research institute participants. They will gather to share the latest in leading-edge technologies and talk about the future of civil and environmental engineering.

Among the major events: the National Concrete Canoe Competition, to be held on Lake Mendota near the Red Gym and Memorial Union Terrace; the National Student Steel Bridge Competition, to be held at the Kohl Center; and the Daniel W. Mead contest, based on student papers and presentations on civil and environmental engineering.

There will also be contests devoted to balsa wood bridge building, concrete ball bowling, and surveying. In addition to ASCE, major event sponsors are Master Builders Technologies Inc., an Ohio-based material supplier and concrete products company, and the American Institute of Steel Construction.

Other institutions that will serve as hosts for the conference include UW-Milwaukee, UW-Platteville, Marquette University and the Milwaukee School of Engineering. The conference also is receiving support from the U.S. Military Academy and the U.S. Air Force Academy.
