Student NewsCivil engineering students construct a successful banquet
The Midwest's largest gathering of design and construction professionals took place in Madison's own Monona Terrace on March 30, 2001. The fourth annual Construction Club Banquet, hosted by the student organization of the same name, brought together almost 500 students, faculty and members of the design and construction industry. "This year's event really did a good job at promoting interaction among our students, UW-Madison researchers and industry leaders," said Awad Hanna, faculty advisor for the Construction Club. "I think we made great progress in building new relationships to benefit both the industry and the university." Joseph Ivey, chairman of the board at Encompass, Inc. delivered the keynote address, in which he focused on leadership development. Later in the evening, six industry leaders received Lifetime Achievement Awards. The award honors and recognizes individuals who have made an impact on the industry and who have helped students become future leaders in the profession. Recipients included:

First annual Flad Prize awardedCivil and environmental engineering student Melissa Kearney recently received the 2001 Flad Prize. The $2,000 prize, established by the Madison-based Flad and Associates, is awarded to an outstanding student who wishes to join Flad for a summer internship. Student receives research awardCivil and environmental engineering student Rebecca Wuellner was selected to receive a 2001-2002 Wisconsin/Hilldale Undergraduate/Faculty Research Award. Wuellner received $3,000; her supervising faculty member, Professor José Pincheira, received $1,000 for expenses related to the research project.
