Did you know that UW-Madison has the only major civil and environmental engineering department without at least one endowed professorship?

Such positions are imperative if we are to enhance our national reputation by attracting, recruiting and retaining the best students, staff and faculty, yet they aren't covered under traditional government funding. Endowed professorships are made possible only through partnerships with our alumni, friends and industry.

With this in mind, the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering has created a development committee to recommend a long-range plan for raising financial support. Over the summer, we plan to create a development plan with targeted goals and specific funding initiatives.

We're hoping you can help us create new opportunities for endowed professorships and undergraduate and graduate research fellowships and scholarships — areas identified as priorities within the department.

Currently, we're working together to fund three endowed professorships of $1 million each. So far, we've raised $250,000 for the Charles G. Salmon Professorship; the C.K. Wang Professorship of Structural Engineering was started with a generous pledge of $500,000 from Professor Wang; and the Paul R. Wolf Professorship was just recently created.

If you are interested in contributing to any of these endowed professorships, or you would like to make a suggestion to the development committee, contact me at russell@engr.wisc.edu or 608/262-7244.

If you are in the Madison area, stop in and see us. Your help and support in achieving our goals are valued and deeply appreciated. With your help we will build a stronger department in the new millennium.
