Professorship update

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is currently raising funds for three professorships. Each professorship honors a distinguished member of the emeritus faculty while building a stronger future for the department. Positions like the ones below cannot be funded through state dollars, they must be created through private support. Your contributions to these and other areas will advance research, teaching and technology in the department. For more information on any of the professorships, please visit with Jeffrey S. Russell, Tel: 608/262-7244, russell@engr.wisc.edu

The Charles G. Salmon Professorship

This $1 million professorship, named for Emeritus Professor Charles G. Salmon, is partially funded at $300,000. Once funding is complete, it will support a position in structural engineering, which will be used to attract or retain an outstanding faculty member.

The professorship recognizes Salmon's contributions to this field. He is widely known for his undergraduate and graduate courses in structural analysis, and steel and reinforced concrete design. Though retired from teaching, Salmon continues to serve his profession through his building code revisions, comprehensive handbook for practicing engineers and most importantly, his continuous updates to his textbooks on steel and concrete.

An expert in design of reinforced concrete structures, steel structures and highway bridges, Salmon's contributions to the concrete and steel industries include education, research and technical leadership.

The C.K. Wang Professorship

Established with a recent $500,000 gift from Emeritus Professor Chu Kia Wang, this $1 million professorship will create a new faculty position in structural engineering.

Wang's novel teaching strategies were put to the test when the personal computer gained popularity. In the 1980s, he developed new teaching materials to expand the use of computers in structural analysis.

With nearly 10,000 pages of text attributed to him, Wang has become a force in civil engineering departments across the nation. His textbooks, including Reinforced Concrete Design (of which Charles Salmon is a co-author) and Statistically Indeterminate Structures, are internationally recognized for their expert analysis of structural engineering.

The Paul R. Wolf Professorship

With a lifelong commitment to surveying, mapping and photogrammetry, Emeritus Professor Paul Wolf's contributions to the department continue into his retirement. This $1 million professorship will create a new faculty position.

Wolf is perhaps best known for his innovative teaching techniques. An outstanding mentor to his many graduate students, he dedicated years of his life to helping others understand the surveying field. Undoubtedly, the most successful venture of his tenure was the annual surveying and mapping summer camp held in the Chequemegon National Forest. Before ending in 1972, the camps gave civil and environmental engineering students hands-on experiences outside the classroom.

THE CONDUIT is a semi-annual Dept. of Civil & Environmental Engineering publication directed to alumni and friends. This publication is paid for with private funds.
