Construction Club banquet set for April 7, 2000

Ken Stinson, Chairman and CEO of Peter Kiewit Sons', Inc. will be the keynote speaker at the 2000 Construction Club banquet at the Monona Terrace Convention Center. More than 75 companies will be represented. Six hundred people are expected to attend.

The club had an active 1998-99 academic year having invited several industry speakers to address the club including: Steve Wittman and Randy Birchfield from RMT, Bill Fehling and Scott Pedretti, Air Products and Chemical, Chris Lloyd-Jones, Union Carbide/Bechtel Association, Dave Cullen, J.P. Cullen, and Greg Thomas, General Council of Fisk Electric. The club also organized several site visits to Miller Park, the Biotechnology Building, and a Marriot Hotel.

Under the direction of Associate Professor Awad Hanna, UW--Madison's Construction Club enhances the educational experience of students studying civil engineering with emphasis in construction engineering and management (CEM). The club is an umbrella organization for student chapters of AGC, NECA, and MCAA. The club grew steadily during its third year and achieved many goals. Several contracting organizations sponsored several students to go to their national conventions. Six students went to MCAA National Convention -- Orlando, Florida with the support of MCAA Wisconsin-chapters. Two students went to NECA national convention with the support of two electrical contractors (Piper and Fisk Electrical).

In April the Construction Club held its first Internship Night. "We were very successful," says Hanna. "Several construction companies were invited to recruit for summer internship and full-time employment. This event allows many companies to interview several students in less than two hours."

The 1999 Banquet with the Design /Construction Industry was held in the Concourse Hotel in Madison, and attracted 400 representatives from industry. The club awarded six lifetime achievement awards to industry leaders who made their mark in the Midwest.

1999 CEE Golf benefit a success

Friday, September 17 was a great day for the third annual CEE Golf Benefit. The weather was warm and sunny and the 36-hole Lake Windsor golf course was in excellent shape. Forty-four participating alumni, friends, faculty and students enjoyed 18 holes of golf followed by a social hour and awards banquet. The organizing committee (Denny Brush, Tom Carlsen, Keith Garnett and Don Jorgensen) did an outstanding job arranging all the details. Special thanks go to the Wisconsin Concrete Pavement Association for sponsoring the $10,000 Hole-in-One contest.

Proceeds from the benefit go to help support student activities in the department such as the Concrete Canoe and the Steel Bridge competitions. Many thanks to our corporate and individual sponsors:

  • Platinum level ($1,000 or more)--Alliant Utilities, Strand Associates
  • Silver level ($250 to $499)--Earth Tech, Wisconsin Transportation Builders Assoc., Don Jorgensen, Keith Garnett
  • Hole sponsors ($100)--Lone Star Industries, Wisconsin Asphalt Assoc., Holnam Inc, LaFarge Corporation, Southdown, Inc, Wisconsin Wire and Steel, Zignego Company, Payne and Dolan.

THE CONDUIT is a semi-annual Dept. of Civil & Environmental Engineering publication directed to alumni and friends. This publication is paid for with private funds.
