My main research interest lies in the behavior of reinforced concrete structures subjected to earthquakes. Recent research projects in this area include the development of behavioral models for evaluating the seismic response of existing buildings, correlation studies between the measured and calculated response of buildings under earthquake ground motions and the behavior of mechanical connectors for precast double-tee floor systems subjected to cyclic loads.
Another area of research is the use of non-destructive methods for the evaluation of existing highway bridges. Many of these structures are approaching their service life and must be upgraded or replaced. In one study, my students and I are working on the development of an improved non-destructive technique for detecting and sizing cracks in steel bridges. The technique allows for a more accurate and rapid detection of flaws and it is less sensitive to operator judgement than the currently available methods. Another aspect of my research in this area involves the integration of the data obtained from different types of non-destructive methods into bridge management systems.
