    Summary

My research focuses on the biological treatment of toxic compounds in the environment and waste treatment processes, understanding of the biological phosphorus removal mechanism, development of new media for removal of toxic compounds, and beneficial reuse of waste products.

We have developed an innovative technology to remove toxic compounds in landfills by replacing leachate collection system media with shredded tires that have been found to have significant capability for sorbing toxic compounds. We are investigating biochemical pathways to explain how phosphorus-accumulating organisms release and uptake phosphorus under anaerobic and aerobic conditions and to develop a simple technique to evaluate whether the wastewater of interest is suitable for biological phosphorus removal. We are developing a new biological phosphorus removal process for high phosphorus-bearing industrial wastewaters such as dairy wastewater. This new process will achieve an effluent phosphorus concentration of < 2 mg-P/L despite the influent phosphorus concentration of > 100 mg-P/L. We are also developing new media to remove phosphorus, organic contaminants such as pesticides and halogenated aliphatics, and inorganic contaminants such as mercury, copper, and cadmium. These media will be used in a filtration system to treat storm water runoff or industrial wastewater.
