730 Engineering Properties of Soils. (Crosslisted with GLE 730.) I or II; 3cr. Determination and interpretation of soil properties for engineering purposes; physio-chemical properties of soil-water systems, permeability and capillarity, compression characteristics of soils, measurement of soil properties in the triaxial test, properties of frozen soils and permafrost. P:Civ Engr 330. Edil.

CEE 330

Prerequisite knowledge and/or skills

Each student is assumed to have been exposed to soil properties and testing at an elementary level.
Students will be expected to have developed technical competence in basic principles of soil mechanics and fundamental of application in engineering practice.

Textbook(s) and/or other required material

'An Introduction to Geotechnical Engineering,' Holtz, Kovacs, Prentice-Hall.

Course objectives

Determination, interpretation, significance and application of the index and engineering properties of soils, including laboratory testing procedures, sample handling, reliability of results, and methods of evaluation and control.

Classification of soils, grain size distribution
Plasticity, Soil fabric
Consolidation
Compaction
Hydraulic Conductivity
Stress-strain behavior, shear strength
Soil suction, Frost action
Subsurface exploration -- borings
Field tests
Expansive soils
Organic soils

Class/laboratory schedule

Class meets twice a week for 50 minutes.
One laboratory session is held each week for two hours.

This course serves students in a variety of engineering majors. The information below describes how the course contributes to the college's educational objectives.

Understanding the methods, instrumentation systems, and accuracy/precision requirements for making measurements of basic and derived physical quantities. Students should have hands on experience to develop an appreciation for the skill, care and intrumentation required to obtain reliable measurements and to verify physical principles. Students should be able to assemble accurate and well-organized write-ups that convey the essentials of engineering processes or plans. Students should recognize the need for life-long learning and have skills that will enable them to engage in life-long learing. Ability to apply knowledge of soil mechanics and the properties of soils usefully and effectively.

Assessment of student progress toward course objectives

Grades will be comprised of laboratory reports, one midterm, class participation, and a final exam.
