698 Special Topics in Construction Engineering and
Management. Irr; 1-4cr. Advanced topics of special
interest to seniors and grad students in construction
engineering and management. This course introduces students to the building design process. Students will gain a beginning understanding of the architectural design process, its methods, tools and processes, and how they interface with other professionals in building design and construction. Through the design process students will gain an understanding of the building as an integrated system of components, assemblies and sub-systems, including: structure, enclosure, internal finish and furnishing, circulation, conveyance and mechanical systems. This course provides the opportunity to learn and apply Sketchup 3D and BIM software (Revit 2010) in the development of design projects. The primary design project provides "real world" context and will involve the design of the site and building for a small urban neighborhood restaurant. Students will also learn about design elements that make a project sustainable, energy efficient and comfortable, including daylighting, passive heating and cooling, energy efficiency and other lower impact approaches identified in LEED standards.
