Course objectives

To apply transportation planning and operations principles to evaluate traffic impacts at the individual project level.
To evaluate alternative designs to mitigate traffic impacts at the individual project level.

Class/laboratory schedule

2 75 minute lecture/discussion/workshop sessions per week

Contribution of course to meeting the professional component

This course contributes primarily to the students' knowledge of engineering topics, and does provide design experience.

The following statement indicates which of the following considerations are included in this course: economic, environmental, ethical, political, societal, health and safety, manufacturability, sustainability.

Proper design of access and internal circulation for new development is essential to minimize negative economic, environmental and safety impacts. Indirect quantification of these impacts is possible by estimating the level of service provided at each intersection.

Relationship of course to undergraduate degree program objectives and outcomes

This course primarily serves students in the department. The information below describes how the course contributes to the undergraduate program objectives.

CEE Outcomes 1, 2 and 4: Students participate in teams to evaluate the traffic impacts of proposed development projects and to propose alternative transportation system improvements to mitigate the traffic impacts. CEE Outcome 5: Students develop an interim progress report and a final report documenting the analysis process and the recommended solutions. Students make an oral presentation to the class and the tranportation professional who serves as the advisor to the class. CEE Outcomes 6, 7 and 8: Through interaction with the transportation professional, students are introduced to the real-world social, political and economic factors that influence development projects and their transportation impacts.

Assessment of student progress toward course objectives

Comprehensive exam covering basic concepts (30%)
Mini-projects that highlight key analysis techniques (10%)
Traffic Impacts Analysis and Design Project (60%)
