CEE 308

Prerequisite knowledge and/or skills

Students taking CEE 659 must have a basic understanding of spatial reference frameworks.

Textbook(s) and/or other required material

No text book is required. However, there is a list of required readings selected from the literature.

Course objectives

CEE 659 contributes to a comprehensive education in the fundamentals of civil and environmental engineering by providing the basis for in-depth knowledge of transportation location referencing systems. It also strives to develop teamwork, leadership, and communication skills through a final course small-group project.

Topics covered

Review of spatial reference frameworks.
Temporal referencing methods and systems.
Linear referencing methods and systems.
Functional requirements for transportation spatial / temporal referencing.
Spatial / temporal data models and standards.
Global Positioning System.
Inertial navigation systems.
Transportation location referencing system design.

Class/laboratory schedule

Three one-hour lectures each week of the semester.

Contribution of course to meeting the professional component

This course contributes primarily to the students' knowledge of engineering topics, and does provide design experience.

The following statement indicates which of the following considerations are included in this course: economic, environmental, ethical, political, societal, health and safety, manufacturability, sustainability.

The final small-group project has an economic component in that the students strive for an optimal design of a transportation location referencing system over a specified geographic extent.

Relationship of course to undergraduate degree program objectives and outcomes

This course primarily serves students in the department. The information below describes how the course contributes to the undergraduate program objectives.

Students completing CEE 659 should be able to use the engineering design process for creative problem solving in the domain of transportation location referencing systems. They should be able to apply methods and determine the accuracy and precision requirements for making measurements. They should have experienced the stages of group development by working on an open-ended team project, with each member of the team playing a specified role. These students should be able to assemble and deliver accurate and well-organized technical presentations. They should know the principles and structure of computer programs and be able to apply computer technology to well-defined problems.

Assessment of student progress toward course objectives

Student performance in this course is assessed through 2 hour exams, a final exam, and a final course project.
