596 Constructability Analysis. I or II; 3cr. Project facility delivery process; conceptual planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance, construction knowledge and experience, analysis of facility design from a construction perspective, constructability concepts. P:Jrst. Russell.

Course objectives

To evaluate and recognize the characteristics of the construction industry.
To understand and apply alternative project delivery systems such as: design/build, design/build/operate/transfer, design/bid/build/warranty.
To understand and apply total quality management and value engineering concepts.
Define and apply constructability concepts, prefabrication, preassembly, and modularization techniques.
To define and apply a process to implement constructability.
Understand and apply the start-up and commissioning processes.
Understand and apply maintainability and operability concepts.

Class/laboratory schedule

Two lectures per week at 1hr. 15min. each.
This class is also available on video tape in Wendt Library. If you are off campus, video tapes may also be obtained by contacting Helene Demont in Distance Education.

RELATED CEE PROGRAM OBJECTIVES Develop teamwork and communication skills required for multi-disciplinary civil and environmental engineering projects Provide experiences in realistic civil and environmental engineering design and construction practice RELATED CEE EDUCATIONAL OUTCOMES Outcome 1: CEE students should be able to use the engineering design process for creative CEE problem solving. Outcome 4: CEE students should experience the stages of group development by working on an open-ended team project. Outcome 5: CEE students should experience the interdisciplinary nature of CEE projects and be able to effectively collaborate and develop consensus in interdisciplinary teams solving multi-disciplinary problems consistent with contemporary issues. Outcome 10: CEE students should recognize the need for life-long learning and have skills that will enable them to engage in life-long learning. Outcome 12: CEE students should be able to perform an economic analysis of alternative CEE solutions and be able to determine the life-cycle cost of a CEE design or process.

Assessment of student progress toward course objectives

Class participation (5%), Homework (10%), (4) Case Studies (85%)
Homework and case studies are designed to help analyze a student's comprehension of ideas presented in class.
