595 Planning/Design/Construction Integration. I or II; 3cr. Students will be involved in construction engineering and management aspects of projects. These projects will be student team efforts supervised by the course faculty members and mentors from professional practice. P:Sr st in Civil & Environmental Engineering or cons inst. Adams, Hanna, Russell.

Requires a basic understanding of the civil engineering requirements, the design process, the construction industry, and basic project management.

Course objectives

To understand and recognize the elements of the design and construction process necessary for a project's execution.
To understand and identify building systems.
To understand and apply "soft-side engineering" skills such as teamwork, leadership, communication, and total quality management.
To broaden a students horizon by reading non-engineering books.

Topics covered

Topics covered include leadership concepts, communication skills, problem solving, decision-making skills, estimating, contracts, and project management.

Class/laboratory schedule

Two lectures per week for 1hr. 15min.

This course contributes primarily to the students' knowledge of engineering topics, but does not provide design experience.

RELATED CEE PROGRAM OBJECTIVES: Develop teamwork and communication skills required for multi-diciplinary projects. Provide experiences in realistic civil and environmental engineering design and construction practice. Provide experiences in leadership and professionalism. RELATED CEE EDUCATIONAL OUTCOMES: Outcome 1: CEE students should be able to use the engineering design process for creative problem solving...Students should be able to synthesize an efficient engineering process or system by integrating solution components. Outcome 4: CEE students should experience the stages of group development by working on an open ended team project. Outcome 6: CEE students should be able to assemble and deliver an accurate and well organized technical presentation that conveys the essentials of engineering processes or plans, and understand the context and purpose of a presentation as appropriate for a particular audience. Outcome 10: CEE students should recognize the need for life-long learning and have skills that will enable them to engage in life-long learning.

Assessment of student progress toward course objectives

2 Book Reports (15%), Class Project (60%), Class Journal (25%)
Book reports, class journal, and class project provide basis to analyze student's comprehension of main ideas presented in class.
