578 Senior Capstone Design. I,II; 3-4 cr. The application of theoretically and academically acquired knowledge to a civil and environmental engineering problem in as near "real world" as possible. P:CivEngr 310, 311, 320, 330, 340, 370, one design course or cons inst. Russell.

Requires basic understanding of the design process and the basic civil engineering courses.

Course objectives

To immerse students in a situation where they work in multi-disciplinary teams to integrate prior course work and skills to solve problems taken from a "real world" context.
To help prepare students for professional practice and to recognize the necessity for continuing education throughout their careers.

RELATED CEE PROGRAM OBJECTIVES: Provide experiences in leadership and professionalism Provide experiences in realistic civil engineering design RELATED CEE EDUCATIONAL OUTCOMES: Outcome 1: CEE students should be able to evaluate society's needs for constructed facilities and natural systems and to design systems, structures, processes or conditions to meet those needs while protecting the environment, conserving resources, and maintaining quality of life. Outcome 4: CEE students will participate in various roles of a team whose function is to define, analyze, and synthesize a solution to an open ended design problem and to understand that problem's relevant multi- disciplinary aspects and contemporary issues. Outcome 5: CEE students will prepare and present accurate and well- organized written and oral engineering solutions, designs, or plans that are appropriate for a particular audience. Outcome 6: CEE students should be able to recognize and respond to ethical, economic, environmental, health, political, safety and social factors in decisions that affect project completion, analysis, design, construction, operation and conduct of duties. Outcome 8: CEE students should be able to determine the life-cycle cost of a process, component, or system and perform an economic analysis of alternative, feasible solutions for a project.
