Prerequisite knowledge and/or skills

Basic knowledge of behavior of constructioin materials and soils. Such knowledge is covered in CEE 395 and CEE 330.
Basic Knowledge of methods for structural analysis and design. Such knowledge is covered in CEE 340.
Basic skills of solving problems by computers and operating software packages.
Basic skills of technical report writing and presentation.

Course objectives

The course is intended for seniors and graduate students of the CEE department. It covers the current methodologies used for design of flexible and rigid pavements in new construction projects and in rehabilitation projects. The course includes theoretical background and design procedures based on empirical and mechanistic relationships between materials, geometry and performance. The specific course objectives are :
Develop competence in fundamentals of designing pavement structures.
Understand and practice process of collecting information necessary for successful design of flexible and rigid pavements, including traffic data, material properties, and environmental factors.
Develop competence in using analytical, numerical, and empirical design methodologies used currently by Highway State Agencies and consultants. Also, learn about advanced and futuristic design approaches under development.
Learn to work in teams to practice professional report writing and presentation of pavement design results and summaries.

Types of pavements
Factors considered in Design of pavements.
Stresses/strains in flexible pavements: Layered systems, visco-elastic Systems, moving loads.
Stresses/deflections in rigid pavements: Dowels and Joints
Traffic Analysis: Equivelant damage factors
Material Characterization: Pre-failure properties, damage charcterization, modeling and testing.
Flexible Pavement Design: Emperical, mecahnistic, Asphalt Institute Model, AASHTO 1993 Method, Kenlayer program
Rigid Pavement Design: PCA Method, AASHTO Method, Kenslab Program
Design of Overlays: Stress/strains, AASHTO method, Asphalt Institute
Procedures for pavement drainage analysis and design
Life Cycle Cost Analaysis (LCCA): Basic principles of cost of materials, user-delay, forcasting of pavement life.
Pavement Performance: Serviceability Concept, non-Destructive Testing

Class/laboratory schedule

The class meets for two 75-minute lectures.
Student groups are asked to meet once a week to discuss group project and prepare periodic presentations to class.

The objectives of this course supports the objectives of the Civil and Engineering Department program by: Providing a comprehensive education in the fundamentals of civil engineering. Developing teamwork and communication skills required for multi-disciplinary civil and environmental engineering projects. Providing experience in realistic civil engineering design projects. Continual improvement of facilities to ensure responsiveness to the needs of civil and environmental engineering practice.

Student progress in this course is assessed by the follwoing mechanisms:
Lecture Reports and Class Presentations: 40 %
Midterm Exam (Take Home):15 %
Final Exam (in class open notes): 20 %
Term Design Project: 25 %
