Catalog Description

556 Remote Sensing Digital Image Processing. (Crosslisted with Civ Engr, Land Arc 556.) I, II; 3 cr. Techniques of enhancement and quantification of remote sensing imagery. Emphasis on processing and analyzing data gathered by airborne and satellite sensors. Techniques to quantitatively analyze data from photography, electro-optical scanners, satellite systems, and radar and passive microwave systems. A 5-week practicum with applications to: agriculture and forestry, geology and soils, water quality, and urban and regional planning. P: Civ Engr/Envir St/Forestry 303 or authorization. Scarpace.

Course objectives

Students are expected to learn techniques of enhancement and quantification of digital imagery acquired by remote sensing.
Students are expected to become familiar with processing and analyzing data gathered by airborne as well as satellite sensors.
The students are expect to design and impliment a practical digital image processing project using techniques learned in class.

Canonical & Principal Component Transformations
Box and MDM Classifiers
Maximum Likelihood Classifier
Unsupervised Classification and Generalization
Coordinate and Image Transformations
Fast Fouir Transforms, Spatial Filtering & Noise Removal
Radar
Change Detection and Orthophoto Production
Production of DEM's

Class/laboratory schedule

2 50 minute lectures per week
1 2 hr laboratory per week.

This course serves students in a variety of engineering majors. The information below describes how the course contributes to the college's educational objectives.

Understand the methods, instrumentation systems, and accuracy/precision requirements for making measurements of basic and derived physical quantities. Ability to select an appropriate solution method for a defined problem, obtain and verify that the solution satisfies all conditions, determine the behavior or response of the system being analyzed from the solution that was obtained, and state the limits of the solution. Students should be able to assemble accurate and well-organized technical presentations that convey the essentials of engineering processes or plans, and understand the context and purpose of a presentation as appropriate for a particular audience. Students should also possess general organiztion skills as a basis for planning efficient engineering processes as well as for effective communication. Students should recognize the need for life-long learning and have skills that will enable them to engage in life-long learning.
