555 Airphoto Interpretation for Terrain Evaluation. (Crosslisted with Civ Engr, GLE 555.) I, Alt Yrs; 2 cr. Determination of soil, bedrock, and drainage characteristics of land areas by airphoto interpretation; physical characteristics of landforms; use of airphoto interpretation for engineering soil surveys, land use suitability evaluation, and land use planning. P: Civ Engr 301 & one of the following: Geology 100 or 101, or Geog/Envir St 120 or 127. Mickelson.

CEE 301 & one of the following: Geol. 100 or 101, or Geog/Enviro St. 120 or 127

Land Form Development and Classification
Differences in Soil and Rock Characteristics
Remote Sensing

Lillesand, T.M. and R.W. Kiefer, Remote Sensing and Image Interpretation, 4th Edition. 2000.

Course objectives

Recognize Major Landforms
To Interpret Soil Types
To Interpret Moist Conditions and Vegetation

Topics covered

Photograph Interpretation of the following:
Sedimentary Rocks
Igneous Rocks
Aeolian Landforms
Glacial Landscapes
Outwash
Fluvial Landforms
Mass Wasting

Class/laboratory schedule

Class meets twice a week for 50 minutes for 2/3 of the semester.
One 2 hour laboratory session is held each week.

This course primarily serves students in the department. The information below describes how the course contributes to the undergraduate program objectives.

Ability to apply knowledge of mathematics and natural science to geological and environmental problems Ability to design, conduct, analyze, and interpret geological engineering site characterization activities that involve interpreting surface and subsurface geologic conditions Understand the methods, instumentation systems, and accuracy/precision requirements for making measurements of basic and derived physical quantities. Students should understand the interdisciplinary nature of GLE projects and be able to effectively collaborate and develop consensus in interdisciplinary teams solving multi-disciplinary problems consistent with contemporary issues. Ability to apply knowledge in physical geology, principle of sedimentation or stratigraphy, and remote sensing.

Assessment of student progress toward course objectives

Grades are calculated as follows:
Lab Exercises comprise 40% of the final grade
One hour exam and the final account for 60% of final grade
