514 Coastal Engineering. (Crosslisted with CEE 514.) II; 2-3 cr. The effect of natural forces associated with storms, hurricanes, and water-level variations on the coastal zone, and efforts made to combat these forces. Wave and storm-surge prediction, the change of waves as they approach shore, and wave forces on the shore; shore erosion and littoral drift; nearshore pollution in lakes and oceans; harbor, breakwater, and revetment design. P: CEE 311 or cons inst. Green.

Course objectives

This course provides an overview of the analysis and design procedures used in the field of coastal engineering. The goals are to develop a basic understanding of physical processes that are important for coastal environment and to apply engineering principles to solve the problems in this environment such as shoreline erosion, natural flooding hazards, water quality deterioration and coastal habitat evanescence.

Topics covered

Introduction and overview of coastal engineering
Coastal water level fluctuations - storm surge, tides, seiches, seasonal and long-term fluctuations
Linear water waves - kinematics, pressure, wave energy and power, group celerity
Finite-amplitude water waves - Stokes, Cnoidal, and Solitary waves, wave theory application
Wave transformations - shoaling, refraction, diffraction, breaking, reflection, wave runup
Irregular waves - wave statistics and spectral analysis
Wind-generated waves - wave hindcasting and forecasting
Engineering design and risk analysis
Coastal structures - forces, revetment, bulkhead/seawall, groin, and breakwater
Coastal processes - cross shore and longshore currents, sediment transport, beach slopes and profiles, coastal morphology
Introduction to coastal management

This course contributes primarily to the students' knowledge of engineering topics, and does provide design experience.

The following statement indicates which of the following considerations are included in this course: economic, environmental, ethical, political, societal, health and safety, manufacturability, sustainability.

This course primarily focuses on understanding coastal environmental processes and provides techniques to solve or mitigate coastal engineering problems that reduce risks to environmental and public health. Examples are also given to describe the political and social aspects of coastal engineering.

Relationship of course to undergraduate degree program objectives and outcomes

This course serves students in a variety of engineering majors. The information below describes how the course contributes to the college's educational objectives.

CEE Objective 1: Provides component of the fundamentals in civil and environmental engineering CEE Objective 2: Develops teamwork and communication skills required for civil and environmental engineering projects CEE Objective 4: Provide experience in realistic civil and environmental engineering design pratice College of Engineering objective: to provide a comprehensive education in engineering fundamentals. The course provides students from various engineering disciplines (chemical, civil, industrial, mechanical, etc.) with an introductory understanding of how engineers can reduce risks to coastal hazards. College of Engineering: to provide opportunities for 'real-world' engineering practice. The homework assisgments and the final project provide students to apply their learning knowledge and techniques to real-world coastal environmental issues.

Assessment of student progress toward course objectives

Assessment is performed with weekly homework assignments, midterm and final project using web presentation
