Principles of estimating and scheduling for the construction industry, engineer's preliminary and final estimates' quantity take offs and cost and duration determinations for major items related to a construction project; use manual and computer techniques. Course objectives

The major objective of this course is to provide detailed information on how contractors, owners, and design professionals prepare costs and schedules for construction projects and how different types of estimates and schedules fit into the total construction process.
The second objective is to provide the students with knowledge on how to do computerized scheduling and estimating.

Class/laboratory schedule

There are two lectures and one lab. The course includes a combination of lectures (2) and lab (1), assigned reading, lecture assignments, lab assignments, exams, and final project. All lab work will be completed using Primavera Project Planning software and timberline. Each student is required to obtain an account at CAE labs.

Contribution of course to meeting the professional component

This course contributes primarily to the students' knowledge of engineering topics, but does not provide design experience.

Economic This course shows the students how economics drive most of the decision in construction projects from decision to bid or not to bid to value engineering analysis. Other topics related to economics that are covered in this course include project finance bonding and surety, and cost contol. Ethical- This course exposes the students to unethical bidding practices such as bid shopping and bid rigging Safety- Construction safety is a major consideration in determining cost and schedule for projects. This course addresses the safety in a format that include workers conpensation payment, experience modification rate (EMR). Other safety topics include trench, formwork, and steel erection safety.

1. Homework will be assigned throughout the semester. Some of these will be comprehensive and may be assigned as a group. Lab assignments are expected to be worked on and completed during lab hours. 2. All written assignments to be typed and double spaced. Hand written assignments will not be accepted. 3. Late assignments will loose 10% per day late unless prior approval from instructor. 4. Attendance for lecture and lab is required. Attendance will be taken at each lecture and lab. If you must miss a lecture or lab, any absences must be cleared with the instructor prior to the time of absence if you expect credit. A student may have no more than two (2) unexcused absences. More than two unexcused absences will result in a grade of incomplete, provided the student is passing in all other respects. 5. The lectures provide the conceptual framework for the course and supplements (not replace) the reading assignments. It will be to the student's advantage to complete the reading assignments prior to the lecture so that questions may be discussed more fully. The student is expected to have a good understanding of the lecture and reading material. 6. Class participation is strongly encouraged. Different ways of participating in class include but are not limited to: 1) presenting a brief summary of the readings upon the instructors request; 2) answering correctly specific questions posed by the instructor or other students during the lecture or lab; or 3) solving a problem on the board for the class. If participation is not voluntary, the instructor will resort to a random selection of students.
