| CEE 447 - Concrete Structures I |
Load estimation skills and structural analysis capability, particularly shear and moment diagrams and envelopes obtained from static analysis under the appropriate loads.
The class objective is to have students understand primary mechanisms of behavior and the basic criteria for design of simple reinforced concrete beams, columns and one-way slabs.
Two 1:15 hour sessions per week.
The following statement indicates which of the following considerations are included in this course: economic, environmental, ethical, political, societal, health and safety, manufacturability, sustainability.
Professionalism is developed through consideration of ethical, economic and societal concerns in determining what level of safety seems to be most appropriate for particular designs to ensure the safety of humans while meeting realistic economic limits in construction.
The class contributes toward meeting two of the general CEE Educational Objectives - providing a comprehensive education in fundamentals, and in developing professionalism by encouraging the use of critical judgement with engineering fundamentals to solve incompletely defined design problems.
Class Outcomes and relation to Departmental Outcomes:
It is expected that students completing this class will be able to:
a.) define service criteria and factored strength criteria for acceptance of basic reinforced concrete members; (Dept outcomes 1,8)
b.) understand where and why reinforcing steel should be placed in members during reinforced concrete construction; (Dept 1)
c.) perform basic shear, bending, and bending-axial capacity analysis and define preliminary design size requirements for basic members; (Dept 1,2,7,11,13)
Assessment of student performance is generally based on grading of student work as follows: 20% homework (text problems, 50% class exams, 30% final exam.
Assessment of the course is obtained by examining student performance and comparing with previous semesters, noting particular topics that students don't appear to learn as well as expected, identifying weaknesses in understanding encountered during presentation of the class, and reviewing standard class evaluations prepared by students at the end of each semester.
