Catalog Description

423 Air Pollution Effects, Measurement and Control. Irr; 3cr. The influence of man-caused pollution on the atmosphere, globally and locally. Evaluation of human health, economic, and aesthetic effects of air pollution. Techniques for measurement of atmosphere pollutant concentrations and determination of local and regional air quality. Detailed presentation of air pollution sources and methods for their control. The role of local, state and federal government in air pollution control. P:Srst.

Course objectives

Develop a basic understanding of the impacts of air pollution on human health, human welfare, living organisms, materials, and the ecosystem
Develop a basic understanding of the chemical and physical processes that transform and transport pollutants in the atmosphere
Develop a basic understanding of the the fundamentals of aerosol dynamics and gas-phase chemistry
Develop a basic understanding of the mechanism that lead to the formation and emissions of air pollutants
Develop a basic understanding of the control technologies used to control air pollution emissions, including process operations, process design, and process limitations
Develop effective written and verbal skills in presenting solutions to engineering problems
Develop skills in teamwork and project leadership
Develop insight into the fundemental principles of engineering design

CEE Objective 1: Provides component of the fundamentals in civil and environmental engineering CEE Objective 2: Development of teamwork and communications skills CEE Objective 4: Provide experience in realistic civil and environmental engineering design pratice Outcome 1: CEE students should be able to use the engineering design process for creative CEE problem solving Outcome 2: CEE students should be able to select an appropriate solution method for a defined problem. Outcome 4: CEE students should experience the stages of group development by working on an open ended team project. Outcome 6: CEE students should be able to assemble and deliver accurate and well organized technical presentations that convey the essentials of engineering processes or plans. Outcome 7: CEE students should have the ability to knowledge of mathematics and natural sciences to civil and environmental engineering

Assessment of student progress toward course objectives

Evaluation of accuracy and presentation of homwork solutions to engineering calculations (20%)
Evaluation of written reports reviewing of air pollution issues (5%)
Evaluation of ability to develop solutions to engineering problems under test conditions (60%)
Evaluation of performance working in a group by course instructor and peer group members (15%)
