406 Remote Sensing Instrumentation. (Crosslisted with EnvirSt 406.) I; 1cr. Remote sensing data acquisition systems and data analysis procedures for quantitative analysis of photographic imagery. Review of principles of physical optics and radiometric properties of cameras as well as other lens-based optical instruments. Radiometers and CCD technology. Instruments mounted on existing and future earth resources satellites. P:Civ Engr 302. Scarpace, Lillesand.

Prerequisite knowledge and/or skills

Knowlege of remote sensing applications involving cameras and satellites necessary.
Knowledge of Physical Optics usefull.

Course objectives

The objectives of this 5 week course are to familarize students with the instruments used on the ground and in the aircraft or satellite that are used for remote sensing data acquisition and analysis.

Topics covered

Review of Physical Optics
Ground Based Radiometers - Visible and Near IR
Ground Based Radiometers - Thermal IR
Sensitometers
Analysis of Black and White Imagery
Analysis of Color and Color-IR Imagery
Instrumentation on Satellites

Class/laboratory schedule

2 50 Minute Lectures per week
1 2 hr Laboratory per week

This course serves students in a variety of engineering majors. The information below describes how the course contributes to the college's educational objectives.

Understand the methods, instrumentation systems, and accuracy/precision requirements for making measurements of basic and derived physical quantities. Ability to select an appropriate solution method for a defined problem, obtain and verify that the solution satisfies all conditions, determine the behavior or response of the system being analyzed from the solution that was obtained, and state the limits of the solution. Students should be able to assemble accurate and well-organized technical presentations that convey the essentials of engineering processes or plans, and understand the context and purpose of a presentation as appropriate for a particular audience. Students should also possess general organization skills as a basis for planning efficient engineering processes as well as for effective communication. Students should recognize the need for life-long learning and have skills that will enable them to engage in life- long learning.
