395 Materials for Constructed Facilities. (Crosslisted with EMA 395.) II; 3cr. Properties and tests of materials used in the initial construction or repair of facilities (including buildings, transportation systems, utility systems, and reinforced earth). Introduction to laboratory and field measurement techniques to assess material performance capabilities. Technical report preparation. P:EMA 304 or con reg. Bosscher, Cramer, Bahia.

Prerequisite knowledge and/or skills

Students taking CEE 395 are expected to have basic knowledge of statics, dynamics and mechnics of material. These skills are covered in EMA 201 (Statics), EMA 202 (Dynamics), and EMA 303 (Mechanics of Materials).
This course includes laboratory measurements. Students should have learned basic skills of experimental measurements, covered in ME/EMA 307 (Mechanics of Materials Lab).
This course includes laboratory data and report writing that requires knowledge of basic computer skills. The course CS 310 (Problem Solving Using Computers)is therefore required.
The course requires data analysis and interpretation. Basic statistical analysis skills are required.Such skills are covered in Stat 224 (Elementary Statistical Analysis).

Required: M. Mamlouk and J. Zaniewski, Materials for Civil Engineering and Construction Engineers, Addison-Wesley, 1999.

Course objectives

Develop competence in fundamentals of behavior of construction materials used in civil engineering applications.
Learn the details of standardized laboratory and field measurement techniques used to evaluate construction materials performance.
Practice and improve technical report writing and presentation skills.
Practice and improve teamwork activities and classroom projects.

8. Masonry: 3lectures

Class/laboratory schedule

Students meet for two 50-minute lectures and one 3hr. lanoratory session every week. There are 6 laboratory sections that students can select from based on availability.
Each laboratory session is restricted to no more than 16 students.

This course contributes primarily to the students' knowledge of college-level mathematics and/or basic sciences and does provide experimental experience.

This course supports the educational objectives of the CEE department by the follwing means: Educatiing studenst in fundamentals of materials used in civil and environmental engineering applications. Developing teamwork and communication skills required for civil and environmental engineering projects Providing experience in realistic civil engineering selection of materials, evaluating materials, and construction practices. OUTCOMES: It is expected that the student will be competent in: Applying knowledge of construction materials behavior creatively to select, specify, and monitor construction of civil engineering structures. Conducting and/or monitoring standardized testing protocols, prepare reports for results, and engage in interpretation of test results. Conducting forensic studies to determine role of material properties or construction methods in failures of structures. Engineering teamwork and communication relevant to construction materials.

Assessment of student progress toward course objectives

The assessment of student progress is done through weekly reports, laboratory written reports, and periodic exams. The following table summarizes the distribution of different mechanisms.
Homework and Laboratory Grades 35%
Lecture quizzes and weekly presentations 15% or less
Two 50-minute Exams - 15% each 30%
Final Exam - 20%
