370 Transportation Engineering. I, II; 3cr. Characteristics of transportation supply and demand; measuring and estimating demand; social and environmental impacts; planning of transportation systems; characteristics of transportation modes; interaction between modes; mode interfaces; transportation technology; economics; public policy, implementation and management. P:Statis 224 or con reg. Smith, Ran.

Course objectives

The primary objective of this course is to introduce students to transportation engineering principles for streets and highways with emphasis on the safe and efficient operation of roadways. Approximately 42,600 people are killed each year on United States roadways - changes in the transportation system are required to reduce this number. In addition, increasing traffic volumes on our roadways has led to congestion in many locations, requiring improved vehicle movement efficiency and new technologies.

...Learn both quantitative and computerized techniques for planning, designing, and operating transportation systems;
...Understand how the political process and new technologies affect transportation;

...Understand how ITE, GIS, GPS, and other technologies are being used to improve transportation; and
...Apply the principles of transportation engineering to a specific problem. The student will be able to evaluate, analyze, design, optimize, simulate, and present a thorough description of their analysis process.

Asset Management
GIS/GPS and referencing systems in transportation.

Class/laboratory schedule

Lecture - two 50 minute periods.
Laboratory - 1 two-hour period.

This course contributes primarily to the students' knowledge of engineering topics, and does provide design experience.

Ecomomic - consideration of road user costs, benefit/cost analysis of transportation alternatives. Environmental - inclusion of environmental impacts in the evaluation of transportation alternatives including emissions, noise and land use. Political - discussion of transportation legislation and the role of the engineer in providing information and analysis and ethics. Societal - discussion of how public interests are included in the transportation planning process. Health and safety - inclusion of safety issues and criteria in the planning, design and operation of highways.

Relationship of course to undergraduate degree program objectives and outcomes

This course primarily serves students in the department. The information below describes how the course contributes to the undergraduate program objectives.

Education in the fundamentals of CEE - transportation is a core discipline within CEE; students will obtain a basic understanding of the requirements for planning, design and operation of a transportation system. Experiences in CEE design - students prepare simple designs. Students will be able to define a problem, conduct experiments, analyze and interpret data, and apply statistical methods. Students will be able to use the engineering design process to develop and evaluate highway designs for horizontal and vertical alignments. Students will be able to select and evaluate appropriate solutions for highway design and traffic engineering problems. Students will be able to apply calculus, statistics and physics to the solution of highway design, traffic engineering and transportation planning problems. Students will be able to identify non-technical factors that affect the planning, design and operation of transportation facilities. Students will be able to use economic analysis to evaluate alternative transportation projects and to determine project life-cycle costs. Students will be able to function on multi-disciplinary teams and communicate ideas effectively. Students will be able to understand the impact of civil engineering decisions on society and understand professional and ethical responsibility. Students will be able to Recognize the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning. Students will be able to understand the role of research in solving engineering problems.

Assessment of student progress toward course objectives

Assessment of learning
Two one-hour exams.
Final exam.
Weekly homework with intensive review of lecture material and homework problems in the weekly laboratory session.
Final course project involving the data collection, analysis, design, and reporting of something within the transportation system.
Participation in outside lectures, public meetings, and professional organizations.
