325 Design of Water Distribution and Waste-Water Collection Systems. I or II or SS; 3cr. Application of basic principles in Sanitary Engineering and Hydraulics to the design of conduits, water distribution systems, reservoirs, pumping stations, stormwater and sanitary sewerage systems, and appurtenances. P:Civ Engr 320 & 311.

Course objectives

To apply knowledge of fluid mechanics and environmental engineering to the problems of drinking water distribution, wastewater collection, and pumping of water
To provide meaningful experience in solving piping and pumping systems
To design drinking water distribution systems, wastewater collection systems, and pump stations
To provide experiences in realistic civil and environmental engineering design and construction practice.
To develop teamwork and communication skills required for multi-disciplinary civil and environmental engineering objectives.

This course contributes primarily to the students' knowledge of engineering topics, and does provide design experience.

The following statement indicates which of the following considerations are included in this course: economic, environmental, ethical, political, societal, health and safety, manufacturability, sustainability.

This course integrates concepts of environmental engineering, hydraulics, and hydrology to the design of water distribution systems, wastewater collection systems, and pumping stations. Emphasis will be given to the actual design along with the management of design projects and preliminary design studies. Economic analysis, an integral part in a course on design, is included through evaluation of various alternative technologies.

Relationship of course to undergraduate degree program objectives and outcomes

This course primarily serves students in the department. The information below describes how the course contributes to the undergraduate program objectives.

This course integrates science and engineering principles to design water distribution systems, wastewater collection systems, and pumping stations. The application of scientific and engineering knowledge in solving engineering problems associated with the design and operation of water distribution and wastewater collection systems is exercised to provide experiences in realistic civil and environmental engineering design practice. The following subjects are used to solve engineering problems: calculus and differential equations; computer spreadsheet programming, data manipulation, statistical analysis, numerical calculation; and fluid mechanics, introductory environmental engineering, and soil mechanics. Through a group project, students will develop teamwork and communication skills necessary for multi-disciplinary civil and environmental engineering projects. Practical examples are covered to develop problem solving skills and to establish lifelong learning of environmental engineering principles. Related CEE Educational Outcomes Outcome 4: CEE Students should experience the stages of group development by working on an open-ended team projects, serve in each of the team roles (leader, member, facilitator, and recorder), comprehend the constructive and destructive behaviors that influence their own interpersonal perceptions, and be able to recognize the constructive and destructive behaviors of others. Outcome 5: CEE students should experience the interdisciplinary nature of CEE projects and be able to effectively collaborate and develop consensus in interdisciplinary teams solving multi-disciplinary problems consistent with contemporary issues. Outcome 6: CEE students should be able to assemble and deliver an accurate and well organized technical presentations that convey the essentials of engineering processes or plans, and understand the context and purpose of a presentation as appropriate for a particular audience. Outcome 7: CEE students should have the ability to apply knowledge of mathematics and natural science (physics, chemistry, biology, and earth science) to civil and environmental problems. Outcome 8: CEE students should recognize the non-technical factors in engineering decision making such as diversity in society and social responsibilities that impact infrastructure construction and the ethical conduct of engineering duties. Outcome 9: CEE students should know the principles and structures of computer programs and be able to apply general-purpose computer tools to solve well-defined problems. Outcome 10: CEE students should recognize the need for life-long learning and have skills that will enable them to engage in life-long learning. Outcome 12: CEE students should be able to perform an economic analysis of alternative CEE solutions and be able to determine the life-cycle cost of a CEE design or process. Outcome 13: CEE students should be able to recognize common failure mechanisms and be able to analyze the failure of a CEE process or system

Assessment of student progress toward course objectives

The primary method of assessing the progress will be through homework (20%), quiz (15%), final exam (15%), design project (40%), and class participation (10%).
Assessment of student progress toward course objectives will be made through continuous private communications during the semester with students and through mid-term examinations and homework problems. Summative assessment will be addressed through standard course evaluations at the end of the semester. In addition, former students who have completed the course will be asked to comment how well the outcomes targeted for the course are met. Overall performance for the current year will be compared with that for previous years.
