320 Environmental Engineering. I, II; 3cr. Fundamental sanitary aspects of environmental engineering. Role of the engineer in the control of the environment; water supply and wastewater problems; solid waste disposal; air pollution; and administration in environmental engineering. P:1year college chem. Boyle, Berthouex, Harrington.

Course objectives

The objective is to provide an introduction to environmental chemistry, drinking water treatment, water quality management, wastewater treatment, hazardous waste management, solid waste management, and air pollution control.
Students are expected to learn the main objectives and functions of primary treatment processes in the areas listed above.
Students should be able to demonstrate this understanding through use of mass balance equations and basic chemistry notation. This will also introduce students to introductory level mathematical modeling of engineered systems.
Students are not expected to address advanced topics such as design and analysis of environmental engineering processes, fate and transport modeling, and pollution control.
The course serves as an important introductory course for those interested in further study in environmental engineering. The natural course sequence for undergraduates interested in environmental engineering is CEE 320 followed by CEE 322 and other courses such as CEE 325, CEE 326, CEE 422, CEE 423, CEE 424, CEE 427, CEE 428, CEE 521, and others. This course contributes primarily to the students' knowledge of engineering topics, but does not provide design experience.

This course primarily focuses on solving engineering problems that reduce risks to environmental and public health. Brief examples are given to describe the political and social aspects of environmental engineering.

This course serves students in a variety of engineering majors. The information below describes how the course contributes to the college's educational objectives.

College of Engineering objective: to provide a comprehensive education in engineering fundamentals. The course provides students from various engineering disciplines (chemical, civil, industrial, mechanical, etc.) with an introductory understanding of how engineers can reduce risks to environmental and public health.

Assessment of student progress toward course objectives

Assessment is performed with three examinations, weekly quizzes, and weekly homework assignments.
