Catalog Description

315 Hydrology. I; 3cr. Water cycle as related to air mass properties and movement, precipitation, evaporation, snowmelt, infiltration, streamflow, floods, and groundwater. Statistical hydrology, and hydrologic simulationsincluding runoff prediction, streamflow and reservoir routing, impoundment operation studies, and urban hydrology. P:Comp Sci 211 or 302 & Civ Engr 311 or cons inst. Potter, Joeres.

Physical Hydrology by Dingman (recommended)

Course objectives

At the end of this course the student should be able to: conduct a hydrologic budget for a water body and estimate uncertainties; describe the physical principles of, estimate, measure, and model the main components of a hydrologic budget, including precipitation, evapotranspiration, infiltration, overland flow, and streamflow.

Topics covered

Formulation of hydrologic budgets
Uncertainty analysis of hydrologic budgets
Precipitation: description of process, measurement, and analysis of data
Evaporation and evapotranspiration: process description, measurement, and modeling
Infiltration: process description, measurement, and modeling
Streamflow: measurement and analysis of data
Rainfall-runoff modeling

Class/laboratory schedule

Three 50 minute classes per week

This course contributes primarily to the students' knowledge of engineering topics, but does not provide design experience.

This course provides a comprehensive education in the understanding, measurement, and modeling of hydrologic systems.

Assessment of student progress toward course objectives

Homework assigments will be used primarily as a learning tool, but will also serve to indicate student's mastery of the course objectives.
Three in-class, untimed exams consisting largely of problems sets will be used to assess the students ability to estimate hydrologic budgets.
One modeling exercise will be used to test the students' ability to simulate the temporal variations in the water levels in a prairie pothole pond under both natural and urbanized conditions.
