304 Remote Sensing Visual Image Interpretation and GIS Integration. (Crosslisted with Envir St, Forestry, and G L E 304.) I, II; 1 cr (P-E). Introduction to the principles, equipment, and techniques utilized to interpret remote sensing imagery visually. Emphasis on airphoto interpretation in a range of application areas; visual analysis of non-photographic remote sensing data; introduction to computer-assisted image interpretation and GIS. P: Civ Engr 301. Lillesand, Kiefer, Scarpace.

College-level algebra and trigonometry
Concepts and foundations of remote sensing
Elements of photographic systems

Lillesand, T.M. and R. W. Kiefer, Remote Sensing and Image Interpretation, 4th Edition, 2000.

Course objectives

This course will develop the students' knowledge of the principles, equipment, and techniques utilized to interpret remote sensing imagery visually. Emphasis is placed on airphoto interpretation in a range of application areas but visual analysis of non-photographic remote sensing data and an introduction to computer-assisted image interpretation and integration of interpreted data in a GIS are also included. The scope and orientation of this course are predicated on the extensive day-to-day use of vertical aerial photographs in natural resource management, engineering, land planning, and environmental assessment.

Introduction and course mechanics
Characteristics of photographic images, interpretation scales, stereoviewing
Cultural feature identification
Land use and land cover mapping
Vegetation mapping, photomorphic units, effective areas
Photo to map transfer, GIS integration
Computer-aided image interpretation
Laboratory/field interpretation exercises

Class/laboratory schedule

A one hour and 55 minute lecture is held each week.
A one hour and 55 minute lab is also held each week.

This course serves students in a variety of engineering majors. The information below describes how the course contributes to the college's educational objectives.

Understand the methods, instrumentation systems, and accuracy/precision requirements for making measurements of basic and derived physical quantities. Ability to select an appropriate solution method for a defined problem, obtain and verify that the solution satisfies all conditions, determine the behavior or response of the system being analyzed from the solution that was obtained, and state the limits of the solution. Students should recognize the need for life-long learning and have skills that will enable them to engage in life-long learning. Ability to apply knowledge in physical geology and remote sensing.

Grades are based on the students' performance on the following:
Homework and Laboratory exercises (30% of final grade)
Final Exam (70%)
