303 Introduction to Remote Sensing Digital Image Processing. (Crosslisted with Envir St, Forestry, and G L E 303.) I, II; 1 cr (P-E). Introduction to the principles, equipment, and techniques to manipulate and interpret digital images. Overview of formats of digital image data and procedures used in image rectification and registration, image enhancement, image classification, and digital image data merger with a GIS. P: Civ Engr 302. Scarpace, Lillesand, Kiefer.

College-level algebra and trigonometry
Concepts and foundations of remote sensing
Elements of photographic systems
Multispectral, thermal, and hyperspectral scanning
Earth resource satellites operating in the optical spectrum

Lillesand, T.M. and R. W. Kiefer, Remote Sensing and Image Interpretation, 4th Edition, 2000

Course objectives

This one-credit module will develop students' knowledge of the principles, equipment, and techniques utilized to manipulate and interpret digital images. The course provides an overview of the various formats of digital image data and the procedures used in image rectification and registration, image enhancement, and image classification.

Image enhancement (2 lectures)
Image Ratios (1 lecture)
Principal Component Transformations (1 lecture)
Image classification (4 lectures)
Accuracy assessment (1/2 lecture)
Fast Fourier Tranformation ( 1/2 lecture)
Review of past exams ( 1 lecture)

Class/laboratory schedule

Two 50 minute lectures per week are held the final 5 weeks of the semester.
Each week, an hour and 55 minute lab is held.

This course contributes primarily to the students' knowledge of engineering topics, but does not provide design experience.

This course primarily serves students in the department. The information below describes how the course contributes to the undergraduate program objectives.

Understand the methods, instrumentation systems, and accuracy/precision requirements for making measurements of basic and derived physical quantities. Ability to select an appropriate solution method for a defined problem, obtain and verify that the solution satisfies all conditions, determine the behavior or response of the system being analyzed from the solution that was obtained, and state the limits of the solution. Students should be able to assemble accurate and well-organized technical presentations that convey the essentials of engineering processes or plans, and understand the context and purpose of a presentation as appropriate for a particular audience. Students should also possess general organiztion skills as a basis for planning efficient engineering processes as well as for effective communication. Students should recognize the need for life-long learning and have skills that will enable them to engage in life-long learning. Ability to apply knowledge in physical geology and remote sensing.

Comprehensive lab report--50%
Final Exam--50%
