Outstanding Researcher for 2006
Dr. Awad S. Hanna

Dr. Awad S. Hanna has been selected as the recipient of the Outstanding Researcher Award for 2006. The panel of judges has determined that he meets or exceeds all criteria and represents the style, effort, and professionalism with which the award has come to be associated.

Dr. Hanna is a professor of construction engineering and management at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His teaching focuses on construction scheduling, cost estimating, project management and control, and computer applications in construction. His research interests include computerized tools for decision making, knowledge-based systems and artificial neural networks, statistical quality control, and construction productivity. A registered professional engineer in the U.S. and Canada, he has more than 20 years of teaching, research, and consulting experience and is the author of Concrete Framework Systems.

At Construction Industry Institute (CII), Dr. Hanna has been the principal investigator on three different research projects. His first project involved the cumulative impact of change orders, a joint study sponsored by CII and the Mechanical Contractors Association of America. The CII model that he developed during this study was accepted by the California Superior Court. Following this groundbreaking effort, he worked with the CII research team studying the cost effectiveness of innovative crew scheduling. In this work, he developed best practices for crew scheduling as well as a user-friendly tool to assist in determining the optimum crew schedule for varying project conditions.

Most recently he was the principal investigator for the study on appropriate allocation of contract risk. The model developed by Dr. Hanna, his graduate students, and the CII research team offers a way for owners and contractors to collaborate more effectively in assessing risk. When implemented, this model can dramatically change the industry’s current practice into a more equitable avenue of assigning risk appropriately.

CII takes great pride in recognizing Dr. Hanna for his outstanding research contributions. His innovative research investigations are valuable and have contributed to the improvement of the industry. Hs is richly deserving of this prestigious award. Congratulations to Dr. Awad S. Hanna on his selection as the Outstanding Researcher for 2006.
