“As a prospective graduate student, married and father of a brand new baby boy, I was certain that I would have to put my pursuit of an M.S. degree in Construction Engineering and Management on hold. Just months before I started the search for a full-time job, Dr. Awad Hanna approached me and formally offered the John G. Nelson Fellowship for the pursuit of my M.S. degree. Financially, the Fellowship made continuation of my education possible whereas it otherwise would not have been affordable. Moreover, with the Fellowship allowing me the opportunity to pursue a M.S. degree under Dr. Hanna’s guidance, I was able to participate in a tremendous research project with the Construction Industry Institute. During completion of this research project, I was able to gain numerous professional contacts and received several full-time job offers upon graduation. Additionally, Dr. Hanna received the Researcher of the Year award from the Construction Industry Institute for the work that he and I accomplished. This work continues to be cited throughout the industry and provides benefit to numerous construction industry participants. The generous offering of the John G. Nelson Fellowship helped make all of this possible. In many ways, I owe a great deal of the accelerated advancement of my career to the John G. Nelson Fellowship. Without this Fellowship, I would not have been able to afford a pursuance of an M.S. degree under Dr. Hanna’s guidance and thus would not have had the opportunity to work on such a high-quality industry deliverable nor gained the networking opportunities that led to my full-time employment. I will, in all honesty and with all sincerity, be forever grateful for Mr. John Nelson’s dedication to the continuous improvement of the construction industry and his generosity and commitment to my education through the offering of his Fellowship.”
