The competition took place April 2 on the UW-Madison College of Engineering campus.
A follow-up competition award will provide funding to enable a junior or senior design team to further research and develop their design. Ultimately, that goal is to advance the invention to commercialization.
Sponsored by University of Wisconsin-Madison electrical engineering alumnus Peter Tong via the Tong Family Foundation, the Tong awards reward biomedical engineering undergraduate teams that design innovative solutions and develop outstanding prototypes. Their work addresses real challenges that University of Wisconsin medical and life sciences faculty and area biomedical companies face and offer for the students to solve.
Sophomores
- Brian Mogen, Erin Devine, Steve Wyche, and Prachi Agarwal designed the “Phonetics-based augmentative communication device for children with significant communication disorders.”
- Laura Zeitler, Elise Larson, Kim Kramer, and Ali Johnson received honorable mention for their design, the “Device to reliably collect broncholaveolar lavage effluent during flexible bronchoscopy.”
Juniors
- Steve Welch, Ryan Kimmel, Kaitlin Brendel, and Joe Decker designed the “MRI-compatible olfactometer.”
- Tyler Vovos, Joel Gaston, Joseph Labuz, and Paul Schildgen received honorable mention for their design, the “Heated diagnostic radiology exam table.”
Seniors
- Holly Liske, Claire Flanagan, Laura Piechura, and Kellen Sheedy designed the “Flow controlled endoscope irrigation pump.”
- Karen Chen, Rexxi Prasasya, and Chou Mai received honorable mention for their design, “Development of anatomical model to demonstrate correct use of female barriers.”
